Default Be sure to check your Target BD purchases, they're still poking holes in cases/discs.

I initially reported on this issue back in 2010 in this thread: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=148967

Last week on 2/28/13 I purchased several new movies from target. Tuesday night I decided to open them and found out one of them had a hole punched through the UPC. The difference between then and now is studios now use 'eco' cases instead of solid cases, so you can take a guess what happened next. They gouged the BD disc itself.

I've spoke to corporate once again and was assured it was absolutely without a doubt never supposed to happen, yet I was told the same three years ago. I;m told I'll be receiving a follow up soon.

Member grrrarg explained it well as it happens at his local store as well:

I actually asked the manager one day and they didn't want to talk about it. They finally said it was for loss prevention purposes in case the item shows up in a pawn shop they can tell what store in the region it came from due to the specific digit they put the hole in.

I wrote a letter to corporate a couple years ago and got no response but the store seemed to stop for a while. Then they started doing it again but only on certain titles.

It is true and it is happening even if you don't believe it! Granted, the frequency has dropped off lately. I could take a picture of it in the store but you'd probably think I bought it, poked a hole in it and returned it and waited for them to restock it

I still think its incredibly bizarre that they are paying people to damage the merchandise.

Well that's annoying.

Off topic: did Hugo come with a slip? I doubt it since it was a clearance item but it'd be awesome if it did.

All the ones at my target did, but they were all either in really bad condition, ripped up or the glue used to hold the slip together is no longer able to keep the end attached.

........
Just checked my copy of Hugo, luckily it didn't have that issue.

Of course there are pics, I always do if you remember my new thread posts. That's why I cannot fathom why a certain member here likes to call me a liar. I have no reason to BS.

No worries; that's just one person.

I try to post pics in new threads, too, if they can help substantiate a new development.

First I've heard of this. My initial thought was that the studio was sending them promotional copies that didn't get distributed to press outlets for review and such. But Paramount typically punches much larger holes in the UPC codes than that. Sounds like something that might be news worthy. Have you tried contacting the local paper or tv news about it? I would think that a major chain purposely defacing merchandise would be of interest, especially if it's damaging the discs.

It isn't specific to a title, just certain target stores. Believe me it's very easy to miss as well.

i browsed some of my recent Target purchases and dont see any pin holes. I wonder if your store has a theft problem and they are marking movies? Kinda stupid, especially if its damaging the discs. I have see some merchandise with these stickers under upc.

I remember you weren't a fan of my original thread years back.

Yes, years ago this specific store was a target for semi-pro thieves and lost thousands in media theft. Initially they poked holes in specific parts of the UPC to track if the movie was sold to a pawn shop or to a very nearby FYE. The store was told by corporate to not to this once they were reported, yet the copy of Hugo I bought last week (which released Feb. 2012) was gouged. What is strange is on my receipt you'll see the same copy purchased twice... only one Hugo was gouged, the other was untouched. One had the Academy award gold sticker on the slip, the other did not.

Can the pinhole in your ET steel be shown in photos? Is it under the fifth number in the UPC?

jw didn't believe shin, either, but guess what? He came across a copy of the E.T. Steelbook with pinhole damage.

Stores were required to stop doing this years ago. I just found out it still is happening. If you don't speak up it won't get corrected.

You must be dense. Please do your research and pay attention before posting.

I praise you for the effort to get them to stop... but once I found out a store was doing that... I definitely would take my business elsewhere. What happens if they stop with the pinhole and start doing something else. I would hate to think I would have to inspect my purchases from that store as carefully as that.

It is amazing for a store to keep doing that, though.

So is this just for the clearance items? I did a random check of BDs I bought at Target and did not see any pinholes. None of them were on clearance though.
