Default Batman Begins and The Matrix

Yet another thread about this. Not really though, this one is a little different.
We already all know those releases are HD DVD exclusive even though their Warner and we all know they are not coming any time soon to Blu-ray. What I am curious about is why. I tried thinking about this and it doesnt make sense to me. I mean, the transfer is already done, all they have to do is shove it on a Blu-ray disc and sell it. Thats easy money to be made with little work involved.

However, if they wait, then by the time they release these titles on Blu-ray, the transfers might look worse by comparison to newer Blu-rays. As we all know the newer Blu-rays look better than the early ones, and this may be true agian a year from now with todays releases being compared to next years. Batman Begins nd Matrix are already pretty old HD DVD releases and the longer they wait the more of a chance there is that they will appear as worse transfers to consumers because of other movies they can compare them to at the time. But that part may be a strecth.

Waiting for The Dark Knight to release Batman Begins so they can promote The Dark Knight also seems kinda pointless, since the Blu-ray crowd that will buy Batman Begins wouldnt even make a dent in the international box office for The Dark Knight, nor would Blu-ray sales make a difference to DVD sales.

And The Matrix, there is nothing to be gained here IMO. No new ones are comig out to promote. This is it. Why not release it?

Just because they have so little work to do to release these and because just about every Blu-ray owner would buy one, I dont see why they would wait.

All I could think of is they dont want those 2 taking away from newer Warner releses. But then why not just chose not to realse anything but this for 2 weeks. It will sell like crazy and cost them very little to release since the transfers are all done.

Iono, why do you guys think these have yet to be released?

I thought they were waiting for the IME. I know T3 now announced with IME, but it's not actually the same as the HD-DVD.

Maybe they are waiting for profile 1.1 to roll out. That would make it easier to port a lot of the material to blu-ray mainly due to the added PIP. At least thats what I would figure. I bet we could expect Batman Begins for sure on BD this next summer when Dark Knight hits theaters

Waiting for the IME would make sense, but they have released a ton of movies w/o IME on blu-ray that had it on HD DVD. What I would like to see is Warner making all of their movies with uncompressed audio and only releasing the ones that fit into 30 GB on HD DVD. If they can justify keeping titles away from Blu-ray because of a lack of IME then why not keep titles away from HD DVD that it's technological inferiority doesnt have room for.

They have nothing to gain by waiting for The Dark Knight.

I agree that it's strange that they've released other titles and not these...I just wondered if they really liked the IME's on those discs. I don't even like to think of the other reason...like maybe they are trying to stunt BD and help HD.

I think it's the PIP. Instead of making a seperate blu-ray transfer they will probably just port over their hddvd into blu-ray.

There was an article just last month; maybe it was Silverberg too.
But it stated that Warner is well aware of Blu's success and that they are waiting on more players with 1.1 and their desire to put out more movies on Blu.

Here's a thought... maybe they are waiting on their final decision about the status of the market share after the holiday season. At which tiime, if they make the choice for the Blu corner, they will give these titles the proper treatment. Perhaps they could be among the first titles Warner goess all out on with the "Blu treatment". And by this I do mean AVC video + PCM 7.1 audio? I have nothing to back this up as a legit theory.... but man I'd be willing to wait a year if I knew that this was the case!!!

Seriously.

Provided the long wait on these and other catch-up titles brings us a superior encode for both sound and video (extras being what they are), it will be an extremely significant victory for Blu-ray -- whether or not Warner decide to go exclusive or not.

I don't want a gimped HD DVD encode on Blu, regardless of the codec used. I want a film done right. And the history of DVD has shown us that once some titles go out with subpar transfers in the early years of a format, sometimes they never come out in proper presentations once the format matures (i.e. Contact or The Abyss).

Now, Warner are on the record as saying that they prefer to do a single encode for both formats for now. But that's one principle that will simply have to change over time.

Because tie-ins are the heart of the busines. You get something because of a big movie an actor/director is in. You get something because of a sequel 9 times out of 10 so they can cross-promote.

And then people will ***** about the double dip

As far as Matrix goes, there simply isn't room in Christmas for another big title. It's coming. Also the Wachowski Bros have Speed Racer coming out in May.

Maybe they want to be sure that we are getting the best picture quality possible. If you think the PQ will be better next year than this year, why not wait until then and get a better product, not just a cheap transfer? I always want the best that I can get, even if I have to wait a bit longer.

First the Kubrick titles came out with 24-bit PCM, now its Licence To Wed.

This means we could very well see Harry Potter 5 with 24/48 PCM.

Warner knows what's up. They could release The Matix tomorrow, but as is evident from their HD DVD releases PIP is a very important part of the package to them, therefore you will not see The Matrix until players hit the market with profile 1.1.

The sooner the PS3 gets it the better.

If The Dark Knight hits cinemas with a trailer in front of it for "Now available in high definition on Blu-ray disc" and does Batman Begins, no-one will complain.
