Default Outrage: Coda (Kitano) Calling all Takeshi Kitano blu-ray fans!!

Editing this.

Either way, Outrage Coda is coming from Film Movement on November 20th, 2018. My personal favorite Japanese film in the last two years.

It does. My primary concern is getting this film as wide of an audience as possible. Most people here aren't going to spend $60 on it, and won't buy it on DVD.

It's a pretty mainstream title, so I'm surprised they aren't sure of it's potential on blu-ray. I'm hoping people here contact them, and let them know there is interest.

At this point they release about half of their new titles on blu. So it's 50/50, but if enough people show interest, there is a much higher chance it coming out on blu-ray soon.

Outrage a mainstream title? I don't think so. I'm still waiting for the UK release of the second one.

For a Japanese film, I consider the films pretty mainstream. Not artsy, or over the top ridiculous. I think the films have the potential of a western audience being able to enjoy and understand with knowing next to nothing about the Japanese culture.

Most new Japanese titles are either to artsy or over the top silly for an average movie goer to enjoy. The Outrage films are pretty straight forward.

Yeah, they can be a little expensive, but their releases are normally top notch. From special features, PQ, to the the booklets, they normally do really great. Prices do go down for a little bit when the films first come out.

Still, if you would like to see this on BD, please let them know! I watched it last week and enjoyed it as it really brings everything full circle from the first two films.

So after talking to Celluloid Dreams, they told me they sold the rights to Film Movement. After talking to Film Movement, they confirmed they have the rights and will be releasing the film. Good news right? Somewhat. They aren't sure that the blu-ray format will be getting the film as there might not be enough interest/demand for Kitano anymore and it might simply just go straight to DVD only. They said they have to gauge interest first, before deciding if it's worth getting a blu-ray release.

So I'm trying to see if this is a film people would want on blu-ray and it's really up to us to help them decide.

I'm a huge fan of the first two films and I watched the this one last week and it was a perfect end to the series. It wouldn't make sense that the third one wouldn't get a blu-ray release seeing as how the first two did. (From Magnolia)

So please post any thoughts here, and if you want to show them that you're interested in this release please e-mail their customer service e-mail at info@filmmovement.com.

If enough interest is shown we can get this film on blu-ray otherwise it's going to DVD only.
Awful. No excuse for a new film to not get a Blu-ray release. Hopefully everyone here (even if they have no intention of buying the film) sends a polite email requesting a Blu-ray.

maybe not excuses, but reasons, maybe. J films being licensed for any global market seem to get hit with clauses that delay their release. maybe the licensee compromised and said 'DVD only' to allow the J BD discs to have a better chance of not being undercut by grey imports?

E-mail sent. I sure hope this works as it would be a shame if this doesn't get a U.S. Blu-ray. Surprised Magnolia hadn't already scooped it up given they released the previous two films.

I could see/understand a delay, so the domestic release has a window of exclusivity, but I doubt if anyone would license a film with a "DVD only" clause.

I actually e-mailed Magnolia when Outrage Coda's first trailer came out and asked them if they would be releasing this as well. They told me no and when I asked why not, their answers started getting weird.

Also, thanks to those who have sent an e-mail out. If interest is shown, there is a much higher chance this gets a release on blu-ray and not just DVD.

Also, if they respond please share what they might say. It would be greatly appreciated to see if the interest is helping. Again, please e-mail if you can.

Sweet. Thanks! I'm really hoping this helps. I would imagine this is a bigger title for them, so you would think a blu-ray would be a shoe in. Plus, it should be easy to just port over the Japanese blu-ray release. Still, who knows.

If this was even remotely close to being mainstream in the US, even by J-cinema standards, this entire thread would be completely redundant because the BD release would have already been announced. Obviously the first two films didn't sell well enough on BD to justify any real enthusiasm on the part of labels in the US, otherwise again: We'd see it announced.

I know that's not what people want to hear. It sucks, I personally feel it sucks, but that is reality. Blu-ray is not the same as DVD as a format, it is considerably more expensive to author and press Blu-ray discs and the smaller boutique labels are understandibly going to require confidence in the saleability or marketability of a title before they take the plunge, and if it's the last film in a trilogy that has underwhelmed sales-wise on the format? What can you do?

IMO I think your best bet of persuading FilmMovement is to start one of those online petitions/polls (not sure how myself, but I'm talking about those proper formal polls/petitions that people make) and tour this topic across every asian cinema forum you can think of, because you're definitely not gonna generate much interest on these boards alone. Just the way it is I'm afraid.

I've actually posted something similar on another forum called Kungfucinema. It used to be a pretty busy place, but it's become very inactive in the last few years.

I'm not sure where else to post or do a poll.

I always thought the Outrage films sold well for Magnolia as there was a Facebook page with over 10,000 members. Lots of people talk about the films and there is plenty of interest via Youtube fan made videos. Dunno.

I would think it's a safer bet than most Japanese films that are released. Only issue is that Film Movement is a bit of a smaller company, that they don't advertise a whole lot.

Hopefully this topic in itself is a bit of an advertisement.

Well that facebook page would certainly be a good place to go next. You could try all the big popular boards like DVDTalk, Home Theater Forum, criterion.org, etc but perhaps you'll reach the widest "pool" by going to social media.

At the end of the day the first film sold well enough to justify Magnet distributing the sequel in the US (which seems more than what we've had here in the UK, studiocanal released the first and walked away) but they passed on the third film. That tells you something: Either the cost of licensing it is much higher than the first two, or the first sequel just didn't sell well.
