Germany Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) - Blu-ray (3D presented in 16:9?)

Thought this deserved a separate thread since there is quite a lot of discussion regarding this going on in the US release thread.

The main thing we have here is that as well as this edition having nearly all the 'scattered-across-retailers' special features from the US release (apart from the iTunes Enhanced Commentary and Best Buy's 30 minutes of extras), multiple sources say that according to Paramount Germany, the 3D Blu-ray is presented in full-screen 16:9 as opposed to 2.35:1.

Whether this means it has variable aspect ratio and full-screen IMAX scenes like most of us were hoping, or more like the broadcast/VOD versions of TDKR and MI:GP with full-screen IMAX scenes and the rest cropped to 16:9, it is unknown.

Hope to find out more about this, especially the aspect ratio stuff!

It's also missing the 30 minutes of extras included in the Best Buy release.

I wonder if the German Blu-Ray contents match the Target in terms of exclusives.

Aatrek on the US forum made a pretty good list on how things are split:

- All Blu-ray sets: Six primary VAM features.
- Best Buy / CinemaNow: Six BB-exclusives, along with the primary VAM.
- Target/Sainsburys/German 3D: Six Target-exclusives (G3D only lists 5), along with the primary VAM.
- iTunes: Commentary, with primary VAM.

So it seems the German 3D version dropped one of the special features from the 2D version. Can anyone actually confirm it though?

EDIT: Well according to these links, the special features are the same on both the German 2D and 3D sets, but they both are missing the "Mr. and Mr. Spock" feature from the Target bonus disc.

Can somebody please tell me what the deal is with the German Phaser Edition? It says sign up to be notified. Is it sold out or has it not gone up for pre order yet? Is it releasing in dec or is that an error? I've asked this many times but have never gotten a reply.

I live in Germany and preordered this one. As soon as I receive it, I can give definite info on the aspect ratio of the 3D version.

It is extremely confusing right now cause Germany seems to be the only country in which Paramount gave the info about the 1,78:1 for 3D. Since Germany is a really big 3D market compared to other countries it might make sense for them still.

same here

Seeing as the Germans look to be the only ones who are getting a dubbed 7.1 TrueHD track (all other international dubs are just regular 5.1 AC3), wouldn't be surprised if Paramount did a separate transfer for Germany...

I believe the aspect ratio confusion comes from the IMAX scenes. My understanding is that the German 3D edition is the only one that has variable aspect ratios, meaning it has the original theatrical ratio, but then for IMAX scenes has the full IMAX picture (hence the 1.78). No other releases of this film include this.

As such, I was hoping I could import the German edition. But does anyone know if it will work on my US PS3? I never know with region coding and all. I've only ever gotten one German release (Erik the Viking) and it worked.

The press release said that the 3D would be constant 1.78:1 throughout so while the IMAX footage would give us expanded shots the rest would be cropped.

Region coding wise it will be fine as Paramount don't region lock titles they have rights too worldwide.

well that's disappointing. Give us the original picture for some scenes, but then ruin the rest of the film to do it. Idiotic.

Thanks for the response!

If this version does have shifting AR, I hope it's not limited to the 3D version. I don't get why they rob the 2D viewers of this feature, like they did with Titanic, when the movie was shot in 2D and converted to 3D anyway. I'd say the majority of us still don't have 3D equipment, and I know I won't until my current TV dies. They gave us IMAX scenes in 2D movies before (Transformers 2, Dark Knight, etc.).
I guess the real AR for IMAX is taller than 1.78:1, so you're still not getting "all of it", as I've seen being argued, but at least it's better than gutting that material down to 2.40:1.

You do realize that the non-IMAX scenes were shot for 2.40:1, right? Even in IMAX theaters those scenes appeared in CinemaScope.

I think he means that if the film is constant 2.40:1 footage would be cropped to 1.78:1 to match the IMAX footage that would also be presented at 2.40:1. Instead, what he wants is the movie with the scope footage at 2.40:1 and the IMAX footage at 1.78:1.

Would this mean the PQ and AQ of the English track might be subpar due to lower bitrates?

Exactly. Both aspect ratios should be displayed correctly - the scope 2:40:1 should retain that aspect ratio with no cropping and the IMAX footage should be displayed at 1:78:1.
