Excellent news! One of the titles I've been hoping they'd do for the last few years now. If they have the elements to do a full HD restoration of the unrated cut, it's a Day 1 buy for me.

New scan please! Either way this is very exciting. This is my all time favorite Christmas horror film!

Please tell me that this will contain the new remaster. I know the remaster only included the theatrical footage of course, but they could easily do a branching version where we can choose from the full remastered theatrical cut, or the extended uncut version using the old footage from the current blu-ray and previous DVD. Sure, the extended scenes would be jarring, but they do the same thing with My Bloody Valentine, and also the current release of Silent Night. The problem is the current disc used an upscale when they could have used the recently remastered version instead.

I'd love to see some new interviews, or even better, a new documentary. This film deserves some extra features attention especially due to the controversy it created at the time.

A new scan was already done. They just didn't use it for the current disc, instead doing a lazy upscale.

The HULU streaming version is the new remaster. It looks like quite a nice improvement over the upscale obviously, but it's only the theatrical version. They would have to do a branching version to the uncut footage, and it's likely that footage will look no better than what's on the current blu-ray. I'm fine with that though if they can't find the uncut footage.

Maybe a miracle has happened and they found and remastered the uncut footage. I wouldn't get my hopes up though. I hope they at least do a branching version. On the one hand, the uncut footage as it is currently looks very jarring, and some may prefer to see the theatrical version just for consistency. On the other hand, I cant get used to the theatrical version because those missing scenes are just as jarring as if they were in there with lower quality. I just can't watch it with all that missing dialogue and gore. It wasn't just gore and nudity that was cut - there was some extra dialogue with the toy store owner and Billy as they were all getting drunk, for instance, and I can't imagine watching it without that dialogue. It's just part of the scene to me.

Oooooooooh snap!

Guys...I think if there's anyone who could finally rediscover the original materials of the gore footage, its definitely the Scream Factory crew.

That said, no Vestron complete box set containing the entire series now since Anchor Bay obviously lost the rights to the first...and perhaps the 2nd film too (when is Scream Factory going to put that bad movie gem out on blu-ray?).

New scan my ass! That transfer floating around on On-Demand services, while it has its own advantages over the Anchor Bay blu-ray, is pretty bad in its own right. Cliff and company may as well give us the definitive blu-ray of this slasher legend.

As I already posted, we'll get a real HD scan of the movie, as both Anchor Bay's blu-ray (which didn't bother me all that much) and the Fangoria version are both terrible HD presentations.

They gotta include the uncut stuff into the remastered transfer. I don't care how jarring the quality dip is.

Uncut or no sale.

I've never seen the theatrical version but after having watched the unrated version a few times and being able to spot all the footage that was cut, I can't even imagine trying to watch the theatrical version. It seems like it would just be a really jarring, jumpy experience with all that stuff missing.

The uncut footage ALWAYS looked bad even on VHS.

This may be the time where it'll FINALLY not look like shit after all these years.

EDIT: This thread's official theme song.

What is the deal with the uncut footage? Where has it been sourced from? I'm guessing the original negatives and film prints have been MIA for decades?

On the old discs, they were from tape masters. Goremeister100 posted all of them in the original Blu-ray release's thread. There's an obvious drop in quality when compared to the rest of the film. Here's hoping that Scream have fixed it.

I guess what I meant was, have things been sourced from inferior (tape, whatever) sources because the original negatives / film elements have been long lost... or was it more of being 'lazy' but those things are known to still exist in some vault somewhere?

So the one guy who's involved with this release was asked on Instagram if this is a new transfer and he said: "Totally new, totally uncut transfer."
