I wonder if they will restore the Ku Klux Klan scenes that were cut from the DVD.

It is indeed the uncut version. All the KKK-scenes and the rest of the missing stuff are included.

For anyone curious about the Vinegar Syndrome release I watched my copy over the weekend and I can confirm that it does contain the often cut KKK scenes.
This is a full length version of the film, but I hesitate to call it uncut as there is still one small change from the theatrical version. At the end of the scene where Hero and Sword reunite on the rooftop, Hero originally jumped away across the night sky, silhouetted in front of the moon. I heard this shot generally lead to laughter in cinemas so it was changed to Hero simply fading out once he jumps up onto the tower. The Vinegar Syndrome Blu Ray (which I assume uses the same master as the Chinese Blu Rays) uses the fade out version of that shot. No run time difference, just a visual change. I've attached a screenshot from the ancient Speedy VCD which until now was my only copy of the full length version of the film. Amongst all the compression artefacts you might just be able to make out Hero jumping in front of the moon as seen in Hong Kong cinemas. ![]() As for the visual quality...it's ok...quite a bit of DNR but I assume that's just because of the master they were given by the Chinese Studio. It's still a huge step up from my old VCD Last edited by HippieDalek; 12-06-2024 at 08:29 AM. Reason: clarification |

Funny enough, there's three different versions of that scene. Special Cut and the BD fade Hero after he lands on the tower, but in the dubbed export cut (Which was available on widescreen DVD in Canada via VSC) he jumps off the tower towards the moon still - but fades into the dark night sky rather than continuing across the moon. Certainly works much more cleanly than the edit made for the special cut / BD. Vinegar Syndrome release seems to add a layer of artificial grain to try and alleviate the DNR. I sort of appreciate it, but it definitely doesn't look quite right, sadly. English dub reverts to the original Cantonese track for sections missing from the export cut, so it seems there was no dub made for the full uncut version (though given the export cut was appreciably longer than the special cut, it's mostly only the KKK scenes that revert to Cantonese, and much of the dialogue in those scenes is already in English anyways.) |
