![]() Saw a TV spot for this the other night on E! It's from the same studio (Lionsgate/Pantelion) that released the current sleeper hit Instructions Not Included. I don't see it being as big as that obviously but with the trailer for this surely being attached to that film and a PG rating that might appeal to the same family audience making that a hit it does seem to be one to keep an eye on. Opens next weekend (October 4th). |

not trying to pick a fight or anything but $35 million isn't exactly the success story of the year. yeah, it made a fantastic return on its $5 million budget and is a successful Spanish speaking film but RIPD made almost that much, After Earth made $60 million and they were flops. it shows you can make a good film that does well without an inflated budget but it isn't like The Hangover in terms of success. it still hit a limited audience.

and We can't forget Kevin Hart's stand up film which had minimal production costs and promotion and made almost $33 million in the US. |

Instructions isn't done yet and will make at least 50 Million. It's not even the budget/gross that are why it's the year's biggest Box Office story (or certainly one of them). What makes it a huge success story is that nobody saw it coming. Even huge hits like The Conjuring could have been expected. Insidious Chapter 2 also had a 5 Million budget but it was expected by most to be a big hit. Instructions came out of nowhere. It's easily the biggest domestic hit targeting the Latino audience. And when one does open well it generally falls fairly fast. Instructions has been holding up really well and still has a very strong per-theater average. |

Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain did well but again it did about what should have been expected. Nothing head-turning. |

The second Spanish-language hit of the fall entered the top ten as the Mexico City-set romantic comedy Pulling Strings debuted to an estimated $2.5M from 387 locations for a respectable $6,460 average. The PG-rated film earned a glowing A+ CinemaScore for Lionsgate and was produced by Latino studio Pantelion which saw its last film Instructions Not Included spend the past five weeks in the national top ten following its $7.8M opening weekend. Its current total is a stellar $41.3M.
http://www.boxofficeguru.com/weekend.htm A+ CinemaScore. Impressive. I wonder if this will get to 10 Million or if it will peter out much quicker than Instructions. I do believe it had plenty of competition for the Latino audience with Gravity, and it will next weekend with Machete Kills. |
