Default Macross Frontier the Movie: The Wings of Goodbye PS3 Game + Movie Hybrid Disc

Quote:
Following last year's release of Macross Froniter The Movie: The False Diva, Namco Bandai is creating another anime x game hybrid disc for Macross Frontier The Movie: The Wings of Goodbye.

Magazine leaks note the Blu-ray version will include a PlayStation 3 game as a bonus, but details about the game have not circulated on to the Internet yet.

Macross Frontier The Movie: The Wings of Goodbye comes out on October 20th in Japan.

I really wish they'd put English subs on these.

Yep, yet another awesome Macross BR movie + PS3 game that we will never see in the US, and will never get an english subtitle for, let alone dub.

How fantastic...

Getting the BD limits you, but you can high def fansubbed MKV from a number of places. Fansubs are usually better than factory subs as they do the songs, etc too.

I have the first BD/hybrid and the game on that one is cool! Only have 10 of the 12 trophies, though.

Is this still the old, good Robotech? The one with Rick and Lisa? (I know, I know, my knowledge of anime is pathetically small). I also liked the Invid series, but don't know if that was part of Macross or just pasted in later.

Robotech was a mash of 3 original series:
Macross (with "Rick Hunter" aka Ikaru Ishijo))
Southern Cross
and Mospeada (known as Invid Invasion in the US)

The two later series have mostly gone by, but Macross is still extremely popular in the Giant Robot genra, probably only bested in popularity by the incredibly enduring Gundam.

Since Macross, we had

Macross Do you remember Love (aka DYRL) - The movie (retelling of the story, considered as a Movie version in the Macross universe itself by the characters)
Macross II (TV series, since disavowed and considered non canonical by Shoji Kawamori, the main man for everything Macross now)
Macross Plus (published in occident by Manga Publishing, fairly easy to find including on Netflix)
Macross Zero (a prequel to the original Macross), OAV series
Macross 7 (TV series very popular in Japan, but never imported in Us due to copyrights problems)

and finally recently .. Macross Frontier, a TV series which then spawned two movies to end the series.

There is a big gap in time between Macross/ DYRL and Macross Plus/ Macross 7, but Frontier is relatively contemporary of these.

Just want to add that macross II takes place in parallel Macross universe (since it follows 80yrs after the events of DYRL and not the TV series which would place it in the yr 2090). Macross Plus (which takes place in the yr 2040 and is the only Macross series that takes place during "peace time")is the true sequel to the original Macross and Macross flashback which Lin Min Mei's last concert on earth before she boards the Megaroad 1 (aka SDF -2) which begins the human emigration project . Macross 7 is the sequel to Macross Plus and takes place in the yr 2045. Macross Frontier celebrates the 25 anniversary of Macross and takes place in the yr 2059.
Lastly, Macross: Do You Remember Love is a film made by the people of earth in the yr 2030 to honor the heroes of space war 1.

Before anyone asks, I didn't look any of this stuff online. This is all based on memory (I'm Macross fan). I need to get the 1st Macross PS3
game.

Play-asia has both games (the 2nd one is available to reserve): LINK LINK

Cool, thanks guys. You think I would have picked some of this up when I lived in Tokyo, but I was too busy playing with the two-foot-tall Macross toys in the seven-level toy shops to pay enough attention.

Actually, the two Macross Frontier movies are an alternate retelling of the story, separate from the TV series (although I think they reuse some footage from the series).

Just some minor things:

- Macross' protagonist was named Hikaru Ichijo (changed to Rick Hunter in Robotech)
- Macross II was a 6-volume OVA. It was not popular in Japan. Mikimoto designed the characters, but Kawamori wasn't involved.
- The "game" included with the first Macross Frontier BD was actually more of a demo.

It's hard to believe Macross Plus was 1994-95. It's actually over 15 years old now. The gap between DYRL and Macross Plus was only 10 years.

Yes because DYRL is a movie made by the people of earth in 2030 honoring the heroes of space war war I (which took place during 2009-2010). Macross II takes place in a parallel universe which takes place 80yrs after the events of DYRL.

Also, for anyone who's interested in learning about Macross's timeline, here's a good site: LINK
NOTE: It hasn't added the events of Macross Frontier.

Ah the angst of being a Macross fan.. this license dispute has gone on way too long.. and its the fans outside of Japan who have lost out..

An example: Macross Zero OVA started almost 10 years ago...it still has no chance of ever coming here..

Some days I think I could really spit in the face of Harmony Gold.
Even though they have 0 rights to any of the new series, the Cease and Desist letter they sent when Macross Zero was supposed to be coming stateside scarred off BigWest (the legitimate owners of the IP). Plus they have renewed the copyright on the name "Macross" for the years 2010-2020 it seems, which would preclude the series to be titled "Macross" in the US.

For Macross 7 and Frontier TV series the problem is even worse, as not only the shows could not be called Macross here, but any importer would have to pay separately for the Video of the show and the soundtracks, this last part having apparently humongous charges due to the popularity of the Macross OSTs in Japan. And frankly, Macross without its OST (Gambatte Sheryl!!) ... it's not really Macross.

Am pondering ordering Movie 1 and Movie 2 ... as expensive as those are.

The precise problem is that it looks like HG does have Tatsunoko's rights outside of Japan. It sucks, but it's the way it is.

I really would have liked to see Macross 7 exported, which is still my favorite right now, though Mac F was pretty cool, too. The main copyright issues are on the music IIRC, but that would have to be redone/dubbed anyway as 1) it's J-pop, 2) would need to be translated, and 3 it's J-pop.

But it was ruled in court that Tatsunoko -only- has the rights to SDFM, and that's it. The IP stays with Big West.
And about the music, unless you'd redo the entire score Robotech style (yuck), that'd be the same problem anyway

Ah well, hope is still alive that one day Big West will ally with Bandai to kick HG in the ... where it hurts (and take them to court), so that we may at least get Macross Zero and the Macross Frontier movies.

One day... maybe.

I would hope that they would take a queue from Mac F and actually get someone popular to do it. Timberlake or whatever female pop chic is hot, but possibly an up and comer. Could tie in great for the Live Action rumors that pop up now and then. I am kinda fond of the Reba West stuff but I recognize it's mostly due to nostalgia.

I'm a bit skeptical of Bandai otherwise given that Macross will always be second fiddle to Gundam, but I hear ya. Giving we're FINALLY in the same region (for BD anyway), I am mostly disappointed Bandai didn't just put English subtitles and give HG the finger that way.

I just don't see that happening anymore. With the way the US anime market is now and you can get HD quality fansubs quite easily..

Talking about Macross, not going to make a whole new thread for it, but for Macross Frontier fans and Macross in general, there is a "live" concert series going on since yesterday in Playstation Home Japan, with a virtual Sheryl and a virtual Ranka.

The times are (Tokyo time)
7/23 - 8pm
7/24 - 1pm& 8pm
7/29 - 1pm& 8pm
7/30 - 1pm&8pm

I tried last night, but with the time difference the 8pm concert was at like 4am, couldn't stay. The setup a few hours beforehand showed commercials for various Macross F products on a giant screen in a stadium setting. Pretty cool. Will try to make it tonight, the 1pm concert should be at 9pm US West coast time.
