USA A Frosty Affair AKA 40 Below and Falling (2015) [No 3D Blu-ray]

Hi, i emailed the guys behind this film film on facebook . Got a reply a while ago .

Hey Gary, thanks for taking interest in 40 Below in 3D we don't get a lot of asks about that but i'm working on putting something together for 3D in North America
I'm actually working on another project to be done in 3D just at a bigger scale so it has a chance in theatres in North America

3D-Space are screening this on YouTube SBS.

Strong, native 3d.

I'd also buy this on 3D Blu-ray.

It was tough to get working - I tried using the YouTube app on my TV, but that wouldn't let me switch the SBS image to 3D - it seems that my TV won't allow the app to be viewed in 3D. So I tried the app on my Virgin Media box, but that for some reason forcibly switched itself to 2D after a minute or so of the intro and would not go back to 3D. I was going to try the app from my PS4 but luckily the app on my Blu-ray player worked, automatically switching to 3D though unfortunately every so often I had to put up with the picture freezing, or losing resolution and switching back to SBS for a few seconds. A good reminder of why I hate streaming.

But, in the ongoing absence of a disc release, I'm super grateful to 3-D Space for giving me the opportunity to watch the film in 3D.

The native 3D was attractive and natural, with characters and scenery frequently appearing out of the screen. Some nice deep interiors too, though most of the film takes place outdoors. And you even get a shotgun pointed in your face, what more can you ask for? As the director says in the intro, there is no genre for 3D. It simply enhances the storytelling, whatever that story may be.

It’s a shame the best outlet the director had for a home release was YouTube. I don’t normally care too much about picture quality but 3d (more than 2d) really needs the highest resolution, colour space and frame rate to sell the illusion.
I liked that it started strong, putting the audience in the audience watching the play. The 3d also worked well selling the scale of the Canadian landscapes particularly with distant mountains.
There were a few too many flat shots scattered throughout which were a bit distracting but the dimensionality was handled better than Every Thing Will be Fine overall, if not as beautifully shot.
Pity it didn’t get a disc. 3d enhances any genre and comedy drama is particularly ill-served, Always Sunset 64 is the only example I can think of.

I watched 40 Below and Falling on Youtube. The video quality isn't great, but it is watchable. The director mentioned in the introduction that the Cinematographer had previously shot IMAX 3D docs, and it really shows. The snowy scenery of Alberta is gorgeous, and every shot is composed to allow the viewer to soak it all in. I live in Los Angeles, and watching this film was the most winter I've had all winter.

The script is endearingly terrible. A Lifetime Channel rom com as written by an alien with no understanding of human relationships. The dialogue is easily the weakest link, but it's a testament to Jewel Staite's charm that she almost makes it work.

If this was available on Blu-ray I'd snap it up immediately. The 3D is beautifully composed and the dialogue offers plenty of unintentional laughs.

On the bright side, Youtube, as hideous as it is for a multitude of reasons unrelated to video quality, does have 4K capability and access to new, more efficient video codecs.

Will try to see how this works on my Sony 3d. It automatically scans for a 3D signal and automatically adjusts if it's side by side. I've done this on the web before so I know that it won't be an internet problem per se if a problem does occur.

I was expecting a terrible script, but from my brief 5 or 10 minute preview I found it surprisingly engaging.
