Default Help

I'm brand new to forum so please be gentle. I am in the market for hdtv and trying to wade through the vastness that is hi-def. I need to know if 720p w/5000:1 contrast ratio or 1080p w/1000:1 contrast ratio? i'm not really sure what the contrast ratio means to movie veiwing, so if anyone can help it would be greatly Appreciated. Thank you

contrast is the diffrence between the black & white, so a tv that is 10000:1 vs 3000:1 the 10000: will look better. The problem is all manufacturers smug there numbers, so if they say 10000:1 it's probly is something like 8651:1.

What tv's (model #'s) are you looking at & what is your budget for a tv.

Contrast is the ratio between the white and black parts in an image. The larger the contrast ratio of a display device, the greater is the difference between the brightest whites and the darkest blacks a video display or projector can show. A contrast rating of say 300:1 would imply that the black level is 300 times darker than the white.

The very best picture can be obtained on 1080P but it depends on your budget as well. What type of TV are you looking at:
DLP- Rear Projection
LCD- Liquid Crystal Display
Plasma

contrast ratio is the difference between the whitest white the tv can display and the blackest black. 1000:1 is bad. anything that is not a bright scene is going to look awful. 5000:1 is a little better, i had a tv with a 6000:1 contrast ratio that was alright. if i was you id go 720p, 5000:1 its probably a little bettter quality product, despite half the resolution. and darthdvds, you need to change your user name to darthbds.

Thanks, the 1080p is a 42" westinghouse and the 720p is a 37" samsung both are LCD. I have around a 1000.00 to spend and i'm trying to get the best bang for my buck so to speak.

Your gonna banged alright at 1000:1 contrast ratio...You might consider saving a little longer. It will probably be worth it in the long run.

Best option- Save money longer for decent 1080p set
Second best- 720p at 5000:1. 1000:1 is TERRIBLE for TV
