I loved this. Not as funny as I expected, but it has a lot of heart. It's basically Waiting meets GLOW.
Regina Hall is getting all the praise here, and rightfully so, but also have to note Haley Lu Richardson and Shayna McHayle as Maci and Danyelle. All three are wonderful and bring so much heart to the movie. The movie takes place mostly over a single chaotic day at a "breasturant" called Double Whammies. We follow Regina Hall's character Lisa, the general manager at Double Whammies, who is basically a saint. Smart, kind, compassionate, and genuinely cares about her girls and the customers. There are those who appreciate her (namely Maci and Danyelle), and those who take advantage of her kindness and treat her like a doormat. There is no subtlety in the movie's commentary about how women are viewed in society and how "toxic masculinity" effects both genders. But for anyone who has worked in the service industry, be it retail or restaurants, there's a lot of truth in how people like Lisa are treated, not just by rude customers but especially by upper management. They become the scapegoats for all management, because they'll take it, and they'll take it with grace. For all the ups and downs Lisa goes through in the course of this 90 minutes, it's all capped off by a really outstanding and therapeutic final scene. Limited theatrical begins on August 24th, so go out and Support The Girls! |

Reviews for this are really good. I also see they are making the film available for VOD rental starting today (probably the main focus of this release, but wanted to give it a one week theatrical exclusive run first)

This was okay. It's a fine film, with some really great performances.
My biggest gripe is: if you've seen the trailer, you've seen the film. There's really not much added of importance in the 90 minute runtime. You get the feel & gist of the film in the 2 minute trailer. 3.5/5 |

Small in scope. But, funny, nonetheless. Regina Hall and the rest of the cast are great!
