I'm currently looking into getting a new tv, but unfortunately I'm trying to keep the price under $1000. I don't need a smart tv, 3D, 4K, or any other feature. All I'm seeking is great a/v performance (obviously 1080p and minimum 120 hz) from a good brand (preferably Sony or Samsung, although I'm not opposed to Panasonic or LG) and that's 50" or larger. Anyone have any suggestions on which model would be best? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm not as savvy when it comes to deciphering which is my best option..

I am sure it won't be long until Samsung follows suit as they are perfecting their UHD and OLED tvs. I agree that plasma is better for so many reason, but the market is swinging towards LED. That being said, now is a good time to buy a tv as the old ones are being cleared out and the new ones coming. In that price range, off the top of my head, Sharp 60 inch, Sony 8 series, Panny LED, that is 1100 ish. Samsung 6 series. At worst Insignia 54.6 inch for around $800. |

Panasonic 50ST60? Its not easy to find one right now, but I'd also get a panny plasma while you still can. The 50ST60 is 1k at Sears right now.

I agree, Panasonic's TC-P50ST60 for $1k is the very best buy for under $1k. We're sold out of all ST60s and just received our last batch of VT60s and ZT60s.
I also agree than Samsung's PN51F8500 delivers an even better pictiure vs. the ST60 series, but cost is about $1,500. It's the end of a great era in this outstanding display technology for Panasonic. Looks like Samsung and LG will continue plasma TVs for 2015-15. -Robert |

That said, the inventory of spare parts won't last forever, and extended warranties will "outlive" availability of parts. Although that usually plays true for every TV, plasma or otherwise. Every year models change and make the previous year's models (and parts) obsolete. Additionally, model changes from year to year make part interchangeability unlikely. Point being, even if Panny was staying in the plasma business, if you had a warranty claim a couple years down the line, parts likely wouldn't be available. |
