Default BD Live..

Last night I was watching my 'Labyrinth' Blu Ray and after it finished I clicked on 'BD Live' on the menu. I'd never used any BD live features before and thought I'd see what it did. After about 5 mins a message flashed up saying 'error, update failed'?

I didn't want to try and update ANYTHING I was just trying to see what BD live features there was, I'm now worried it part updated my player meaning I've lost my multi-region capability?

Is this likely?

Sony shut off its BD-Live servers years ago.

Thanks for the reply- any idea what the disc /player was trying to 'update'?

Do you recommend turning BDlive off?

That's usually a good idea for most BDs.

At this point, I think only Universal really bothers with BD-Live content, and that's just to show you trailers.

Thanks.

I've just disabled BDlive access and checked a Criterion BD which still plays so all is well.

BD Live was an ill-conceived idea to sort of merge phyiscal media with online content.

Sometimes there would put some bonus features online (in addition to what was already on the disc, where applicable), or have other features. Sometimes there would be lame things to download like a different looking time/chapter bar than the default one on the disc (I think one of the awful Bayformers movies had something like this). The data for such a feature would save to the internal memory of your player.

As stated, it's pretty much been mostly abandoned, and when it is still used, it's mostly for trailers and the like.

It's best to leave that option shut off IMO. One time I accidentally had it turned on and it was force-loading new trailers (that weren't on the disc) for me to watch before the movie started, and it just slowed everything down and annoyed the hell out of me more than anything. LOL

BD-Live could have been neat, but when I first tried it, it was so damn SLOW just to get started! They never even once updated the trailers on the ones I got either- a few weeks ago I checked out the BD-Live stuff on the crappy "Friday the 13th" remake- the system was still online but all the trailers were from the time the disc came out- saw "Coming Soon" messages for stuff that's now in the bargain bins! The whole point of that was to update the material on a regular basis, but it never happened.

I like BD-LIVE and have it activated on all my Blu-ray players. With modern Blu-ray players BD-LIVE is fast and reliable most of the time. Most studios have stopped using BD-LIVE since disc loading is more reliable with the older model Blu-ray players when BD-LIVE is not used. Universal studios still uses BD-LIVE on 99% of their Blu-ray discs including rental versions. Universal Studios streams trailers at 1080P quality with 2.0 DTS stereo with BD-LIVE (older Universal Blu-ray titles have streaming commentary tracks as bonus features). Its nice having the latest trailers to watch when inserting a Blu-ray disc, however in terms of quality I like the old disc based trailers since the picture and sound quality is better when compared to streaming trailers.

I still maintain, after all of these years, that BD-Live functionality served greatest potential in the concept of incorporating it into a worldwide database of subtitles. But alas... nobody in Hollywood is smart enough for that!

My wife is Japanese and 98% of the Blu-rays that I purchase from all over the world do not have Japanese subtitles included. BD-Live could have very easily offered the ability to incorporate Japanese subtitles to any/all of my Blu-rays. This would have given foreigners, whose native language is not that of the countries in which they are living, more incentive to purchase content.

I've always kept my BD-Live turned off. Some blu-rays won't play when BD-Live is active.

I've always kept my BD-Live on. EVERY Blu-ray has played fine when BD-Live is active.

Of course, I have a PS3 as my Blu-ray player.

I had a problem playing Ponyo for my daughter a few years ago. I had to turn BD-Live off for it to play. This problem probably has been fixed by now with firmware updates. It was a borrowed disc so I can't test it to see if the problem still exist.
