Default Pre-ordering question?

Would you rather preorder BluRays before or after they announce the features?
Would you still preorder ?

I never see the point in pre ordering movies or games unless you get a really good bonus for doing it.

I always pre order from Amazon due to their low price guarantee. If I change my mind up to a few days before release I can just cancel.

I agree because, usually the price remains the same after the blu-rays are released, and you still have to wait until the released date (like everybody else) to receive them anyway, whether you pre-order or not. There are no perks, when you've pre-order, so what's the purpose of ordering movies 3-4 months in advance. It doesn't make any sense! Some people have a habit of pre-ordering because, it gives them a thrill of instant gratification, even though, they still doesn't have the blu-ray(s) in their hands yet.

Yep, pretty much this!
Thank you for the great "safety net" Amazon.

The purpose, at least through Amazon, is that you'll receive the lowest price they offer it for between the time you pre-order and the end of release day. They usually match the lowest price from major retailers, so you're going to end up with the cheapest price around. And there have been a handful of times where Amazon briefly dropped the price (either on purpose or on accident) at some point after I pre-ordered, and I ended up with a heck of a great deal. If I wouldn't have had the title pre-ordered, I would have missed out on the deal. And sometimes there are other incentives like a coupon (several Disney releases have had these) or movie cash.

So, if it's a title you want to have during release week, pre-ordering early through Amazon makes a lot of sense. You can always cancel if an exclusive pops up that you'd prefer or if there's a discount of some sort that you won't be able to get through Amazon.

I don't see the point in pre-ordering. I've never done it and have always been able to get the same deal on the same set at the store. Whether it's been steel books or exclusive covers, I've always found them at the store.
I actually prefer the hunt to look for it.

I always pre-order the films I really want as it means I get them 2-3 weeks before release

I will pre-order titles that I don't foresee having a big (or any) price drop down the road. A good example is concert blu-rays, as their prices seem to stay pretty much the same even years later and you seldom see any sales for them either.

I pre order, not only for the best price from amazon with prime shipping, but it's a whole lot easier and cheaper to just drive home from work and open the package on my doorstep than to go out of the way to a store and spend the extra time to price match...wait in line...use gas etc.

You're paying $80.00 a year for Amazon Prime Shipping, so you're still not saving nothing. They give you a savings in one hand, and take it right back (and more) out the other!

I save quite bit past that initial $80 as I buy many things on Amazon other than movies.

For which I get an increasingly solid movie/TV streaming service, a great Kindle library of books, and unlimited 2 day shipping (including release day delivery for movies). With as much as I use all of the above, and with as far away as Best Buy and Target are (not to mention other stores since I buy all kinds of stuff from Amazon), I'm saving a ton of money with Prime. $80 a year is nothing compared to what I'm getting in return.

My wife and I, easily, spend thousands on a wife range of things such as: diapers, childrens clothes, household goods, BDs, etc...Amazon, at least for us, doesn't charge tax. That coupled with the free shipping on hundreds of shipments over the year equals tremendous savings.
Then there's the whole VOD content that comes free with Prime, which we have used here & there. A fantastic bonus.
$80 for Amazon Prime, when used wisely, is the best deal on the planet: FACT.

As typical, you're just not looking at the bigger picture here.

Well I guess it's worth it to some, but personally, it doesn't justified me paying $80.00 extra for Prime, especially if i'm spending $35.00 or more to get free shipping anyway.

Now you're getting it! It's called having options.
Having as many options, as possible, is never a bad thing.

You assume that I'm utilizing Amazon Prime for shipping of blurays alone...that would be wrong. 2 day Christmas gift shipping alone saves me more than enough to pay for Prime and then some (along with Instant Video and travel savings).

Bottom line is I'd still pre-order with or without knowing the features especially with Amazon Prime.

Precisely.

To me, it's Amazon specific.

Unless there was some sweet pre-order bonus I'd never pre-order in a retail store (usually it just feels like a scam). The only item I can recall I ever preordered was the GameCube Zelda game because you got a bonus disc with the N64 games (which is actually a decently valuable disc these days).

With Amazon, though, as soon as a title is introduced that I want I click over and preorder it. Not only am I guaranteed the best price on release (I have yet to see a sale anywhere that they didn't match), it comes on release day, and I don't have to remember it or think about it. I shop at Amazon constantly, so at least once a week I run into my order history and check my open orders and review what's coming - you can make adjustments with no penalty up until it ships, so if I suddenly change my mind it's just a click or two to cancel.

So I think pre-orders are generally scammy as most retailers do them - but with Amazon preorders, they are a whole different ballgame and the convenience and function is perfect for how I shop/collect. I can't think of a single negative for me, it's all win-win-win.
