Default Ratatouille vs. Shrek 3 Review

Anyone notice something interesting here?

http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/1139/shrekthethird.html

Actually a bit hilarious...but we knew it wasn't that good of a story.

---------------------------------
Obvious better choice here:

You mean the lack of lossless audio? or that the movie itself scored so low?

Well, we knew that the movie itself was less than great. But since Bracke reviewed both, I think it's great that he actually cited Cars and Ratatouille in his critique of this movie. Also, it is funny that they didn't have the best quailty "they" could put out on "their" media type.

Are you really that surprised? I certainly am not. We have the better format and the better quality titles.

One reason why I think we should celebrate a bit with this one.

You know, I'm not one who even cares about extras on blu ray but I do admit that I get tired of seeing 5 stars across the board and then in the supplements it's like 2-1/2 or 3 stars. Why is it taking so long for studios to beef up this aspect of the product?

I'm not sure why Bracke gave Shrek a "Recommended" stamp

The movie itself sucks big time compared to Ratatouille, it lacks lossless audio, oh and please don't give me that crap about DD+ being "good enough". If you compare Shrek the Turd to Ratatouille it shouldn't score above "Give it a Rent", PQ aside.

I don't get their scores lately. A movie scoring 4 stars, 5 on PQ and 4 on Audio and no real extra's gets a "Give it a Rent" status while Shrek really SUCKS and that one is Recommended? Man o man, anyone can review movies today can't they

Bracke said he gave it a recommended because:

A) Kids would want to watch it over and over again...of course parents are going to want that.

B) Video and Extras

So, just because it's a four overall with a recommended final word, I still have to say that he does have his reasons. I agree with what you said that I don't understand their reviews all the time, but such is life.

You'd be surprised what kids will find to watch over and over. But again, I said HE stated that he had his reasons to give it a recommended rating.

Only reason its recommanded:

How many animated features does HD DVD have ? (lol - I couldn't even bear myself to put the word "quality" before "animated", because Shrek3 is downright awful, and that's from someone who really likes the first two)

I love this little line:

"Why the studio continues to eschew high-res audio on such major releases as this and the recent 'Transformers' remains a complete mystery to me."

Come on Peter, you KNOW why they aren't putting lossless on this, because it's on friggin' HD-DVD!!!

Is it just me or does anyone else hate how High-Def Digest splits the "Supplements" from the "HD Extras" ? It throws me off every time, like when I saw the Ratatouille review and it had 1 1/2 stars for the supplements when I knew it had a bunch of extras (HD extras, sigh, 3 1/2 stars). Stupid reviewing system they have.

Giving it a 4* overall rating based on a 2.5* story seems out of line. Also feels like he stretched to make sure he gave it a 5* video score.

I saw both movies in the theater, that's what happens when you have a 4 year old. I enjoyed both ratatoiulle and Shrek and honestly liked both pretty well. The rat has longer legs to enjoy longer, IMO. Cars blows them both away.

Default Ratatouille vs. Shrek 3 Review

The Movie Itself 2.5 out of 5
HD Video Quality 5 out of 5
HD Audio Quality 4 out of 5
Supplements 2.5 out of 5
High-Def Extras 2.5 out of 5

So how did this rate a 4 star overall? if you add these numbers and divide by 5, you get 3.3 stars. HMMMMMM?

And the "High-Def Extras" don't even need to be in HD, as it is just the extras that the HD version got. For instance, Hot Fuzz on HD DVD got a good score there with SD extras that weren't on the DVD. For day-and-date things it seems like this section is somewhat for the people who would consider buying the DVD if the high definition version isn't enough of an upgrade, otherwise there isn't much reason not to just rate the extras as a whole. I guess if people already own the DVD then the differences in extras might be important though.

I do find it odd that Ratatouille isnt getting 5/5 for extras. This is only the second movie in my entire life that ive bothered with extras.

The 2 shorts were great, the game was fun, and I didnt even get to the multitude of clips or even the easter egg!!! i give it 5 for everything
