Default 'The Grudge' Headed Back to theaters with new Reboot

Quote:
Gather round, children, and I’ll tell you a tale, a tale of a time when the spirits of young Japanese girls haunted movie theaters around the world. The fad likely started with 1998′s Ringu, a horror movie that inspired Gore Verbinski’s 2002 film, The Ring. That same year, writer-director Takashi Shimizu took the genre further with Ju-On: The Grudge. True to form, that film was also remade in America, with Takashi again at the helm and Sarah Michelle Gellar in a starring role. I tell you this because even though The Grudge managed to churn out a few sequels, the property is now headed for a total reboot with plans to build a new franchise. Hit the jump for more.

Deadline reports that Ghost House Pictures and Good Universe will relaunch The Grudge with Jeff Buhler (Midnight Meat Train) drafting the script. The low-budget horror film was the first in a series that focused on “the curse of a deceased family’s violent rage that destroys the lives of everyone who comes in contact with it.” Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Taka Ichise will produce, with Roy Lee, Doug Davison, Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane executive producing.

Nice! The original American remake was damn good. But the latest film was... ugh.

I guess it's a sad day for horror film fans when we are to start seeing the remakes of the remakes. Lame.

Yawn. The one with Sarah Michelle Gellar was very good though.

I actually thought it was too. The Director had a great sense of camera work and pacing. It was a slower brew but worked for me. I expected nothing from it but was surprised.

So...reboot of a remake of a reboot... got it.

The worst part about this is that it just provides material for Scary Movie 6, 7, 8, 9, (infinity).

Just you wait! This industry never changes, other than the rollover of the folks buying movie tickets. I'm 50, and seldom go to the cinema at all anymore. I just have no real interest; they're simply rehashing everything, now with bonus added CGI!

They've been "rehashing" everything since the birth of cinema.

CGI is just the latest tool for telling a story. Like previous leaps in special effects technology.

I really love the Japanese Ju-on/Grudge movies, but could never care for the American ones, and I heard the last one was really, really bad, so...

I remember in 2004 I'd be on the computer at 2am and all of the sudden the grudge commercials would come on... The cat boy would scare the crap out of me

Unacceptable, will not support in any way shape or form, no need to remake or reboot The Grudge, you should however make Grudge 3 and make it better than Grudge 1 (will be a challenge) or Grudge 2 (should be easy to do since that was just an abysmal film to me) but no, we get a remake of a remake???!!! Yea ok...pass!

They already did make a Grudge 3. It came out in 2009. That's why they're rebooting this.

There's already a Grudge 3. It was released straight to DVD and it was terrible.

The first one has that creepy scariness for me that just gets to me. I'm a grown man and still don't want to watch it alone.
It was alot of fun in the theater though. I remember being giddy with fear because one thing the movie does well is draw out the suspense for a big "gotcha" moment.
True story, everyone busted up laughing when Bill Pullman went over the balcony in the beginning. It was just too soon to take seriously.

I actually thought The Grudge 3 was pretty decent. I'd say it was slightly better than the second, though the first is definitely the best.

I too would like The Grudge 2 on Blu-ray...
