Studio Ghibli via GKIDS - Blu-ray Forum

On their Twitter account, GKIDS said they WILL NOT be re-releasing their current Studio Ghibli films: Ocean Waves (1993), Only Yesterday (1991), The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2013), and When Marnie Was There (2014). The company said they are proud of the work they have done on these releases and there is nothing they would change to them yet.

On their Twitter account, GKIDS said they WILL NOT be releasing their own version of Grave of the Fireflies (1988) as it is not represented by Studio Ghibli in the USA. As such, the film can be purchased on Blu-ray via Sentai Filmworks.

Wonder if GKids will manage to include all English dubs for this? I doubt it, but still.

Interesting. GKids are the ones that are distributing the Miyazaki films playing in theaters these next few months so makes sense.

I only own Spirited Away and Kiki from Disney but I hope these are good releases so I can pick them up.

Hopefully they will have some good covers. Original Japanese poster art would be a plus. I would love to get rid of the Disney versions with the dub actors names on them.

What's sad about it? Everyone seems to be happy GKids has them now. I don't particularly care either way.

So glad I purchased The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki when it went on sale earlier this year. I wasn't a huge fan of Disney's individual release art, but the Amazon exclusive set is a thing of beauty.

Actually I'm a little surprised they didn't snag the rights to a few of these titles. It might have been an all or nothing scenario, but I could totally see them releasing Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke...

With some titles, Gkids will fix issues like the dubtitles. The majority of the Ghibli line from Disney are perfectly fine though, so there will be very little reason to double dip aside from wanting a new collection of slipcovered Ghibli films (

).

The best thing to come out of this is that Gkids will be releasing My Neighbors The Yamadas sometime next year

Yes please, if they add extras like the 6 1/2 hour making of documentary on Princess Mononoke. But the word from GKids right now is that they're just duplicating the extras from the Japanese Blu-Rays, so here's hoping they release more premium editions further down the line.

I imagine they will simply be ports (much like when Lionsgate reissued the Miramax titles Disney previously did). GKIDS doesn't distribute the home video releases. They simply distribute through Universal.

And the biggest demand seems to be for My Neighbor Totoro to have the Streamline/Troma dub. I really do not get why people want this so badly. It's a terrible dub. Besides, these were intended to be seen in their native Japanese.

Old dubs, old tweaks etc. Ghibli is extremely particular about their masters and what is "studio approved." While I share some fondness/nostalgia for previous versions of things, Ghibli is particular about the dub you hear and the presentation you receive. In a good way. These editions will be "studio approved." We are carefully reviewing transfers, updating subtitles (where appropriate) and going nuts on the QC process. And pushing some buttons on requests every now and then. If you already own these releases, I don't expect a double dip... yet. We are going to try to earn it

- We are starting to release to catalog titles in October and will release a few new ones each month with a goal to get them all on shelves by end of Q1 2018.

- Yes this includes Yamadas on Bluray [sic]. I am really looking forward to spreading the joy of that film across the land.

- Artwork is going to be similar to previous US editions on some releases, different on others. It will be revealed this week for the October titles. Every Bluray [sic] will have a translated booklet, DVD and BD combo will have O-cards.
