Can't wait for the bubble bath cliffhanger to Episode 5.

Now at least they have a bit more people power to take on The Crusade. If they focus on that one after with'll pretty much have a complete season of b/w Doctor Who.

United Kingdom Doctor Who: Fury from the Deep (Story 42)

Details:

Quote:
Just announced on The Animations panel at London Comic Con, Fury from the Deep will be released in 2020 on DVD, Blu-ray and as an exclusive Steelbook next year. It will follow The Faceless Ones, announced earlier this year, and fill another gap in missing Doctor Who episodes.

Fury from the Deep is the missing sixth serial of the fifth season of Doctor Who, which was first broadcast in six weekly parts from March to April 1968. Starring Patrick Troughton as the Doctor, the story concerns a colony of sentient, parasitic seaweed, last seen in the eighteenth century, returning to attack a number of gas instillations in the North Sea in an attempt to take over humanity.

No full episodes of this story exist within the BBC archives, and only snippets of footage and still images are still around to represent the story. However, off-air recordings of the soundtrack do exist, making the animation of a complete serial possible once again.

The six new animated episodes are being made in full colour, in the original black and white and in high definition and the release will include the surviving clips from the original 1968 production. It also stars Frazer Hines as Jamie McCrimmon and Deborah Watling as Victoria Waterfield

This is great news as it’s one of my most-wanted stories. Sad on one level though as this likely means that Indiana Morris hasn’t found hide nor hair of it on his adventures.

Well we know at least Episode 3 of The Web of Fear exists but whether the private collector has looked after it we can't even guarantee it would be viewable if he allowed the BBC a copy of it.

Private collectors I’d say are more inclined to look after these things properly than not. If Morris’ explanation is accurate and it was snaffled away by A N Other then you’ve got to figure that they’d know how to look after it.

That being said, I’m not 100% convinced by the ‘collector whisking it away’ story. Nor is Paul Vanezis - he thinks it more likely that the station manager who took the episode originally probably panicked when confronted and possibly destroyed any evidence. A shame if true.

Morris has said that he’d found shipping information, but this is Morris, king of hyperbole and obfuscation.

At this point, I think it’s 50/50 whether that episode is ever recovered.

Well at least we know there are two existing Hartnell episodes in a collectors hands. Though Paul Vanezis seems quite happy to let them sit on a shelf and make no effort to get them back.

The grand sum of f**k all.

It was a stretch of imagination and a suspension of disbelief to begin with, but given that it's been 6 years now since WEB and ENEMY were handed back, with little sign that anything else is coming back any time this side of the sun going 'nova, the general consensus appears to be that it is, and always was, b*llox.

Indiana Morris said that he would reveal his findings once the global search had been concluded. Everyone thought he meant when he'd been to all the overseas broadcast locations and thoroughly checked them. Sadly, the search now appears to have been expanded to include attics, basements, cupboards in every house, in every country. He's even checking landfill sites and dumping grounds out in the middle of the desert, so don't hold your breath.

And after all that, he'll tell us he's found SPACE PIRATES 2, and THE SMUGGLERS 4......

I had such high hopes of getting more Troughton having heard the two Dalek Stories which always sounded the most intriguing of the Dalek stories were imminently on their way to the BBC.

The only rumour from around that time that I retain any kind of positivity around is the original MEW - WEB and ENEMY were heavily rumoured prior to the announcement of their return, and this obviously proved to be ultimately true. However the other part of those rumours was that MARCO POLO was also coming back. Obviously, it didn’t.

MARCO was, I believe, the serial that had the most copies struck and sent overseas as auditions/promos, so it’s return was probably always a slightly higher possibility than the other stories.

If you remember back to when Morris finally revealed that WEB 3 had originally been found with the rest of the episodes, he also said that the station manager in question took that can, plus something else, the identity of which has never been revealed. MARCO? Also remember that Morris blamed himself for the loss because he told people back at the Beeb that he’d made a find. Hence, did the MEW rumours originate from somewhere within Auntie, between Morris telling the Beeb and WEB 3 (and the other thing) going walkies....?

By Vanezis’ own admission, he was surprised when WEB was returned and 3 was missing. So quite possible that they were also still expecting MARCO if it had been offered alongside the other two serials.

I think its the reason we haven't heard confirmation on anything else because of that instance so maybe there are other things yet to be secured that wont have anything said about them until they are ?

Who knows what negotiations are going on out of public sight.

I'd like to think that's the reason its gone quiet but the reality is probably we've seen the last of finds.

That’s exactly the reason that Morris trotted out for shutting down all info. Vanezis also followed suit on his ‘missing episodes’ forum. The ‘Africa search updates’ thread abruptly went quiet and Paul has recently confirmed that that was a direct consequence of the WEB 3 situation.

That is a plausible reason and approach, but, it’s worn thin at this point. It doesn’t help that Morris shifts the goalposts - the overseas locations were thoroughly checked and cleared years ago. Since then we’ve had audition prints, private collectors, local cinemas, landfill sites etc trotted out as additional avenues of investigation, so the ‘search’ goes on and on and on.

Now you’re right, behind the scenes negotiations etc could still be ongoing, but the longer it takes the less likely that is IMO - it’s been 6 years since WEB and ENEMY. Once located have any previous episodes taken this long to be repatriated?

I think the general sentiment is one that believes Morris overstated his hand, perhaps buoyed by early successes, that weren’t able to be followed up on.

My own feeling is that Marco/Web 3 are possibilities, perhaps a handful of orphaned episodes too, but nothing approaching the likes of full serials. Add to that a couple of episodes in private hands and possibly some audition prints in Iran, and that’s probably the top end estimate of what we might eventually get back.

I think they’ve probably tried as best they can, but ultimately there’s only so much they can do. People have suggested naming and shaming said individual(s) in order to apply pressure but tbh, that is a dangerous line to take and will not be looked on favourably by other (more reasonable) collectors who may come into possession of episodes later.

For the moment, although out of reach, they are at least safe. It’s a matter of waiting for said collector(s) to change their mind, or kick the bucket and hope to get them back afterwards from their heirs.
