Default Best Decade for Science Fiction?

I have to go with the 1980's, due to Blade Runner, Robocop, The Thing, Aliens, The Terminator, and Predator, among others.

the 80s had more "good" mvoies,
but the 70s had "better" movies

But I'm going with 80s. the quantity/quality was just better.

The 70s & 80s are the best Sci-fi decades by far. They really explored different aspects of the genre. I have more of my favourites in the 80s however, so went with the greatest decade to be a kid in.

Late 60's brought 2001 and Planet of the Apes, but the 70's had most of my favorites.

Yeah, the 70s deserves its props for 2001, Star Wars, Clockwork Orange, Alien, Silent Running, Close Encounters, Soylent Green, Logan's Run, etc., but the 80s is a strong contender in its own right. It gave us:
  • The Abyss
  • Akira
  • Aliens
  • Altered States
  • Back to the Future
  • Bill and Ted
  • Blade Runner
  • Brazil
  • Dune
  • The Empire Strikes Back / Return of the Jedi
  • Enemy Mine
  • ET
  • Fist of the North Star
  • The Fly
  • Godzilla '84 / Godzilla vs Biolante
  • Escape From NY
  • Nausicaa
  • 1984
  • Outland
  • Predator
  • The Quiet Earth
  • The Road Warrior
  • RoboCop
  • The Running Man
  • Star Treks II - IV
  • The Terminator
  • They Live
  • The Thing
Plus a lot more. Personally, I value this lot over most earlier works.

Best decade, without a shadow of a doubt, is the 1960s.

2001: A Space Odyssey revolutionised science fiction on film. You can see it's influence on other films, even Alien.

It's also the decade we have Star Trek on television, something that would stay as an icon of the genre to even today.

Growing up as a kid in the 70's may have something to do with my choice. Then again, those films were being made by a lot of young and hungry filmmakers and practical effects were entering the pinnacle of the(pre CG) era. I also like some the nihilistic movie endings of that time that aren't so popular today.

Yeah late 60's thru the early 80's is my favorite sci-fi.

Honestly though whilst it definitely helped create sci fi as a "serious" genre I think 2001 actually ended up having much less influence on what followed than Solaris did.

Kubrick's modernist style was rarely followed(maybe Tron?) afterwards were as Tarkovsky's messy "used future" really became the dominant look in sci fi by the late 70's, Starwars, Alien, Blade Runner, etc.
