Great film! Glad Arrow are finally upgrading this one also. Now Thieves' Highway and Night and The City would complete the Dassin noir classics, but it's Fox and BFI respectively who own the rights to these I think.

Let's hope that Criterion will upgarde their DVD release of The Naked City in 2015.
Edit from my original phrasing :

It probably won't change a lot of things material-wise though : the HD master used by Arrow has been provided by Criterion. Except if they create a new master for their release, the qualitative jump will probably remains narrow over the Arrow release (save a couple shaky transitions and some further cleaning).

I watched this over the weekend, the version from the new tales from the urban jungle.
It wasn't really the classic was expecting. Quite a lot of the acting wasn't very convincing, and overly melodramatic. This was possibly from using "ordinary" people in some roles. The best part of the film was the location filming in New York, which gives a time capsule of the late 1940's city. The worst was the narration through most of the film, which completed prevented me from getting into the film. In other words it was a typical case of doing something first, but not the best way. The restoration looked pretty good to me.

I've always thought the film overrated and the narration always gets on my nerves as well. On the other hand, BRUTE FORCE really IS a classic.

For those outside of Region B, I can confirm that the "Panasonic trick" works for this disc on my region-A Panasonic UB-420 player. Note: this refers only to the newer, remastered Arrow edition from the set Tales From the Urban Jungle: Brute Force & The Naked City.
