No, it never was. I'm pretty sure they are in that format in region 2 from season 4 on

No, but I know for a fact season 2 onward are. There are previews on season 4 episodes that show widescreen footage from seasons 2 & 3. I wish they would have released season 2 & 3 in widescreen after seeing the scenes.

I don't think seasons 2 and 3 were ever available anywhere in that format. I think maybe the segments you're referring to were cropped so that they could fit in with the footage from season 4 without it looking awkward, no? I've seen that myself on netflix.

They weren't cropped:

And I know they aren't available, but they could have been!

Thanks a lot guys, so only 4-7 were released in widescreen on DVD anywhere?

This discussion has made me want to ask another question, are the widescreen episodes shown on Hulu and Netflix cropped?

Yeah, only seasons 4-7 were released in 16:9 in the UK and I think a few other places. I don't have an answer for the Hulu and Netflix question. :/ Those will be unused apps on my Blu-ray player for the time being. lol

They're like the region 2 DVDs. Season 4 onwards is widescreen on netflix and amazon (and I assume Hulu).

And thanks for the caps, Drewbee87. I hadn't noticed that.

No problem, the 16:9 cap is from a region 2 rip I downloaded. The intro is where I noticed scenes from seasons 2 & 3 were non-cropped 16:9!

I watched them on netflix, so I'm used to those versions (and would like them on a blu-ray version)...even though most other viewers (and members on here) prefer it the way it was intended and originally broadcast. Oddly, I never noticed that in the opening intro.

I'd like them on blu-ray in 16:9 as well, without cropping. I'm sure Joss has plenty of money now to consider re-mastering Buffy for a 16:9 Blu-ray release. lol But I know it probably won't happen. I can never understand why I've seen so many say "It can't be done". Seeing what visual effects editors do to raw footage tells me it can be done. He can have the cameras/crew members/lights etc. removed & the effects re-done, and they don't even have to be new effects. I've seen videos on youtube where a fan recreated certain season vamp dustings. It's just time & money that makes this a never going to see kind of thing.

They were framed for 1.33:1 apparently. Sometimes the 16x9 versions have crew or equipment visible because they weren't paying enough attention. Often the compositions are 'off' because the extra picture information in the 16x9 frame isn't meant to be part of the composition. I have read that Joss prefers the 4x3 versions.

Although they should be able to just go back to the negative and reframe it to 16x9, cropping when needed. But I guess that would cost a lot of labor-hours to do.

Yeah, it can get pretty confusing. Although all this stuff is why I stopped using the term 'OAR' since it's not accurate. Sometimes I refer to 'IAR' (intended aspect ratio) or just specifically name the ratios.

This is when I am teaching my film class. My imaginary film class.

The first three seasons are worldwide in the original AR of 1.33:1, and from season four and onward are the seasons in Widescreen in Europe and Australia. The American DVD releases are if I'm not mistaken in all seasons in the original AR with exception of the Musical Episode which was filmed for widescreen and aired in widescreen.

I have actually seen a couple of episode's in widescreen, and I really recommend watching them in 4:3 however. The composition feels somewhat off in quite alot of cases, plus a couple of special effects are clearly not ment for the wider ratio. Blue Screens that litterly become Blue Screens, Not so beheaded beheaded vampire's, Actor's waiting for their Cue, Wires for effects (not stunt wires however) and alot more.

You really are better of with the original ratio's, although I do have to admit, some moments look oretty good in Widescreen. But still I really would like to advice to just watch it correctly

Spot on. If people want to fill their 16:9 screens, go right ahead. But the widescreen framing looks soooo awkward and off-kilter, and I find it very distracting. 4:3 all the way for me.

I'm used to the widescreen versions as they are the ones I have on DVD and I got them before I understood anything about aspect ratio. If they ever did come out on BD (which they could, but would need STTNG-levels of work) I wouldn't be surprised if it was just one version worldwide, and Joss would probably want that to be 4:3. Whether he'd have the power to do that or not, I don't know.

a couple of the seasons are 4:3 and the rest are widescreen but my hope is that they all get excellent transfers and get lossless audio of possible.

i have no problem watching the original Star Trek tv shows on blu in their 4:3 aspect because they have been very well restored.

at the end of the day, that should be what's important. because widescreen and looking like crap is not a good thing over 4:3 and looking incredible.

imo...

I have both versions. I prefer the widescreen episodes for the most part, but I can't watch 'the Body' in 16x9 because of two jarring moments where crew/equipment is visible. It takes you out of the moment and it's Joss Whedon's masterpiece, so 4:3 version of that episode is the way to go.

I always thought season one of Angel was in widescreen and I swear it was on Channel 4. But the DVD is 4:3.

What was the message Joss Whedon wrote for Buffy's US releases about the widescreen?

That GIF worked out well....
