Default A24 | The Souvenir (2019)

The Souvenir
written and directed by
Joanna Hogg

Quote:
Between script pitches and camera setups, Julie hosts a film-school cohort party where she meets a mysterious man named Anthony. A few days later, Anthony invites Julie to a tea room and asks to stay with her for a few days. Thus begins Julie’s first serious love affair. Ignoring her cohort and borrowing large amounts of money from her parents, Julie surrenders to the relationship and prioritizes Anthony’s needs.
Director: Joanna Hogg

Cast: Honor Swinton Byrne, Tom Burke, Tilda Swinton

World Premiere: Sundance Film Festival 2019

A24 Buys Tilda Swinton’s Romance-Drama ‘The Souvenir’

A24 has bought North American rights Tilda Swinton’s romance-drama “The Souvenir” ahead of its premiere next month at the Sundance Film Festival.

The film introduces Honor Swinton Byrne — Swinton’s daughter in real life — and also stars Tom Burke (“Only God Forgives”). Swinton Byrne plays a quiet film student who begins to find her voice as an artist while navigating a turbulent courtship with a charismatic but untrustworthy man (Burke). She defies her protective mother (Swinton) and concerned friends as she slips deeper and deeper into an intense, emotionally fraught relationship that comes dangerously close to destroying her dreams.

British writer/director Joanna Hogg directs from her own script for Protagonist Pictures and 30West. Martin Scorsese came on as executive producer of “The Souvenir” after he saw Hogg’s second film, “Archipelago.”

“Each of Joanna’s films has a mesmerizing power and uncommon intimacy, and ‘The Souvenir’ shows a filmmaker at the height of her craft,” A24 said. “The film brilliantly captures the heady, formative days of first love and a young woman’s efforts to give shape to her art, and we could not be more excited to bring ‘The Souvenir’ to a wide audience.”

Well, if the worst review is an 80 from Peter Bradshaw, you're doing pretty well.

Definitely sounds interesting.

I'm sure it'll be good, but that trailer didn't really do anything for me

Archipelago has been on my watchlist for a while now, but I have yet to see a film from this director. It will be interesting to see mother and daughter acting together.

An Education vibes from this.

Yeah, I'll definitely watch this one. The trailer was great, and love that poster.

It appears to be that way. I'm actually quite sure it will be. I just have a feeling about it. (I respond to dark vibes in a somewhat positive sense.)

Rated R for some sexuality, graphic nudity,
drug material and language.

I found this to be rather disappointing. There's good performances, but I the story was a bit trite and predictable.

Also, Tilda Swinton's part is smaller than you'd expect.

I'll probably rent it this weekend. (I just hate paying for A24 releases when I know that they will be Free with Prime later on.)

Anyway, Tilda Swinton was just the draw, she was never the star. Maybe she will be featured more prominently in Part II?

After thinking on it - the concept of this movie is pretty great.....

[Show spoiler]The Director is Julie. We are seeing the single slice of life segment of her life experience that lead to the film 'The Souvenir' being made. Julie (which is also the name of the girl in the painting 'The Souvenir') is discouraged from making a film about a boy in Sunderland, and instead encouraged to draw on her life experiences in order to connect to her art. The Souvenir is then, the result.

It's not for everybody but it is very interesting film-making.

Finally going to check this out. I kept seeing Honor and didn’t realize she was Tilda’s daughter.

Surprised they made a sequel of a little seen indie.

Well it’s not like a cash grab, it’s literally a second part to the first film.
