Default Mixing/Mismatching Releases

Hey, question for everyone.

As we are all collectors, I'm sure I'm not the only one who buys things that are impractical. Such examples include:

- German Mediabooks of non-English language movies that don't come with English subtitles. (Example: UHD Lamb Mediabook. Language is Icelandic, but being a German release, only German subtitles are included. Can't use this disc).
- Cool packaging for a standard blu ray release when you want 4K. (Example: Bought a Hereditary mediabook that's a standard blu-ray release, but would rather have a UHD disc)

So I've always heard people talking about swapping discs. So for my two examples; I'd buy an English-friendly release and put that disc into my Mediabook. And I'd buy the 4K release of Hereditary and place that disc in my Mediabook.

My question is; what do you then do with the original disc + regular packaging? Do you also place those on the same shelf? Do you hide the undesirables away in a closet, out of sight out of mind? Do you try and somehow sell your Frankenstein sets of mismatched cases & discs?

Just curious how everyone goes about doing this.

I've done several of those ideas. I've stored some out-of-the-way after swapping disc/cases and some I've sold off on eBay. In my description, I let it be known what media they are getting in the case (which could be a foreign 4K or just a blu-ray inside of an 4K case; it depends). I keep some of the cases stored in case of breakage or future sale (like if a new release with DV, better encoding, or something else comes out). An example at the moment; I've taken the Universal Monster 4K sets and incorporated the 4K disk into the 30-movie collection (replacing the blu-rays). Now my primary 4K monster movies are all in one set with all of the other monster movies (not on 4K). It kind of makes the ultimate set. I love individual packaging and slips, but with a series like that, I find it easier to condense them into one case to save space.

The closest thing I do to that is separate the discs in a boxed set. Example being this Hammer set. I put them in individual cases and printed custom covers so they could be in the correct spot on my shelves.

As far as what you do, I applaud you, even if I think you're a mad man. There's nothing wrong with curating your collection to your exact specifications.

You're not wrong! But I'm so much "over" just standard plastic cases. I'm pretty much in my collecting phase of only buying something if it comes in a full slip, steelbook, or mediabook form. Makes things...tricky.
