Default The HDMI receiver poll & discussion

HDMI receiver, lossless audio, DTHD, DTS-HDMA, if you have one of these and want to vote in the poll, great! If you're hunting for one, that's great too.

But especially if you've had a bad experience with one of these, by all means, comment.

I'm trying to decide which AVR I will get to replace my ailing ancient Pioneer VSX-1016 that I got last year (it didn't take any audio via hdmi, only switches hdmi).

Edit : Typo - the onkyo refers to all hdmi-audio capable receviers, 805 was left out by mistake.

Have the 605, it has been great since day 1, highly recommended for a lower-end but solid receiver.

Why the emphasis on Onkyo? I have a Denon AVR-4306 (HDMI 1.1). Works great and I love me my PCM Blu-ray tracks. Heavenly Sword and Warhawk make my walls rumble.

I think Onkyo just seems to have a nice balance of features vs. price. They seem to have a great reputation in the A/V receiver business as well.

You left one out

"Don't really care about HDMI audio use coax/optical for 5.1 audio"

analog outs

I don't like running the HDMI throw the reciever. I don't like having to ALWAYS have my reciever on just to watch something when it is late at night, when I just want very low volume, I like options.

My next reciever will be a Yamaha or Denon.

I have a Denon 3806, got a good deal for it. Was going to wait for the "08" models because of the HDMI 1.3, DTS-HD & DD-TrHD decoding, but once I heard the PS3 HDMI 1.3 did not support audio, I got the 3806. I actualy do notice a difference between sending bitstream to the reciever verses PCM for dolby ditigal and DTS. I feel that the Denon does a better job decoding bitstream than the PS3. Bitstream sounds WAAAAY better then having the PS3 decode it and send it via PCM. Of course for the movies that are DD-TrueHD, I'll set it to PCM. Any one else Feel this way? cause what I've read is that you lose quality when having it on bitstream cuase its compressed.

This is exactly the reason I want to move away from my PS3 to a dedicated player. I want to send the DTS MA and Dolby HD straight to the receiver. I think the new Pana will be the best but I can't get one cause as always we brits have to wait!

Onkyo is my favorite, but the one thing about my current pioneer receiver I like is that it comes with a mic that I place at my normal listening position, press a button, and it tunes all the volumes and delays for each channel automatically, saves me lots of time.

If the Onkyo has that, chances are that I will pick one of those up. The pioneer 9120 is extremely expensive in canada.

So do you agree? The reciever does a better job decoding, therefor better sound quality sending bitstream?

Can't really comment yet. I still have only a PS3 so can't bitstream. I'm only going by what I have read in other threads.

yeah, I keep reading how sending bitstream, because its a compressed stream, that you lose quality. but by sending PCM you get the full quailty of the sound. I don't know how long I've gone back and forth, back and forth, between the two, and my concusion is that Bitstream is the better. oh well... maybe its a user prefreance thing. Thanks for you input.

I will know soon enough. As with all things AV it is down to personel taste and not what SHOULD BE better
