Default The Monster Project (Found-Footage Horror Movie)

Quote:
In a chilling and inventive take on the classic monster movie genre, THE MONSTER PROJECT follows a group of aspiring horror filmmakers, eager to raise their YouTube subscriber count, who post an online casting call for "real life" monsters to interview for their documentary. They find three participants and choose to film them sharing their haunted experiences in a mansion in the woods on the night of a lunar eclipse. The production suddenly turns into a nightmare when the participants transform into a real vampire, demon, and skinwalker (a type of harmful witch, according to Navajo legends, that can transform into any animal with the intent of harming people), forcing the unsuspecting crew to fight for their lives.
This is a pretty cool idea for a horror film. Looks enjoyable.

I've grown tired of the found footage movies, BUT I do like what they're doing here with this one. I'm in for a viewing.

Yup. Look, the trouble with horror is that you can't do the same thing for any length of time because it gets unscary fast. This would have been terrifying I am sure........in 1994. Scare wise, there is absolutely nothing original in that trailer. I had zero reaction. Horror is one of a my favourite genres and I have seen a LOT of horror. We have seen this movie a thousand times already. The crash bang "be scared" soundtrack, the green night vision, the creepy faces lurching out of the darkness, the...zzzzzzzzzzz

Found footage has its place but it has very limited wiggle room to be original. While the topic of this film sounds a little different the same old horror clichés look to be intact.

I'm sure it won't be great but it looks enjoyable. I don't at all expect it to be scary. I don't ask that of any horror movies really because I don't get scared. I just want to be entertained.

Haha, fair enough. I kind of do need my horror to be scary. It's their fundamental Job! I prefer my comedies to be funny too but hey!

Thing with found footage, and most horror actually, is that the budgets are usually so low that they are usually profitable. It's the reason horror as a genre has such a large amount of crap to its name. But hey, we all need throwaway 90 minute brainless crap every now and then don't we?

Speaking of originality, found footage has its place as the term used for the technique (or even actual genre sometimes) in (especially) experimental films & documentaries. And that has been used a long time before people started to apply it as a genre name for these horror films and similar ones, which makes it a bit confusing in a bad way.

Except for when you simply don't get scared at anything. Then it would be very very hard to enjoy any horror movie by your standards.

My standards? Ok. Well I don't think I would label it as having standards to ask a horror film to be scary. Maybe it is, I dunno. Some genres, including horror, are much more narrow focused than others. Audiences expect fewer things from them. I think most people just expect to be scared from a horror and little else. Same for comedy. A drama however can have a wealth of goodness in it across the board and is a little harder to pinpoint what you go into it for.

Now that's not to say horror cant (and shouldn't) try for more than scares. The best horrors transcend just scares. But this type of movie? No. This is cheap, throwaway crap that no one is going to see for its acting or script.

I find it curious that you say you don't get scared by horror. I would say that everyone is scared by something. Maybe you should try some foreign stuff. I rarely scare at US horror but some Asian and Spanish stuff chills me to the core. Even if it's something like An Inconvenient Truth, something will scare you.

The only type of "scared" I get is when a movie lingers with me long after I've left the theater.

It's when I don't want to walk to my car alone.
It's when I don't want to turn the lights off when I go to sleep.
It's when I feel anxious and paranoid.

It has nothing to do with how I am feeling during the film. It's how the film resonates with me afterwards.

When I watch horror movies, I'm a stone cold statue. Jump scares are 100% worthless and ineffective to me. I haven't flinched during a horror movie in years. I haven't yelled or screamed ever. I can't even think of a time when my heart rate rose during a horror film. Jump scares don't work. I don't find most horror "scary", but I don't watch horror to be scary. I watch horror because it's a very specific genre and style of filmmaking, which I love more than anything.

Then me and you sir would very much enjoy the same kind of film. I guess I am encompassing all sub genres of horror when I talk. I agree, the jump scare PG 13 stuff has zero effect on me too. Atmospere and a feeling of dread is everything for me so I have zero interest in stuff like the film in the op, not because I "know" it will be a bad film but because it seems to walk the same worn path set out by so many others. It looks cheap and lazy. Its why, although I do not find it "scary" I can find a lot of greatness in a film like The Orphanage.

Watched a little this morning. maybe 20 minutes or so. The black guy in it is by far the worst actor ever. And he talks all the time soooo...........even if this movie does eventually get interesting or scary, I can see him being the reason I would hate it.

2 negative and 2 positive reviews on RT. Sounds decent from the positive ones. Decent enough for me to check out anyway.

An above-average variation on a familiar theme and style, and in a market glutted with scary movies that's no small achievement.
- Maitland McDonagh, Film Journal International

It's sometimes tough to follow the action, but for a short while it's breathless fun, as escaping one monster leads the group to the next.
