ABBA: The Movie (1977) was released November 25, 2008

ABBA: The Movie

Yes, it's been out for years, but fans who may want to discuss it here can do so.

Warner Bros

News today on the movie:

Trafalgar, Warner Bros. To Release Remastered ‘ABBA: The Movie’ Concert Film In May For Group’s 50th Anniversary

From the article:

"ABBA: The Movie DCP was remastered from IP and scanned at 2K resolution. During the remastering process, dirt, scratches, and stains were digitally removed and the audio restored. The remaster was completed at Motion Picture Imaging on the Warner Bros. studio lot."

Wonder what the chance of an new release based on the 2K restoration?
The 2008 release got a good review, but a fresh restoration is always interesting.

Is the 2008 a remake? Have the 1977 version.

They are all mad down there. It's like Beatlemania, only worse.

No, the 2008 release is what was released in 1977. They had restored it and released a DVD in 2005, then later on blu-ray. The second post above is about a new restoration of the movie. It’s probably for special events/screenings promoting their 50th anniversary. It would be nice to get a new disc.

I questioned it because it was shown as ABBA: The Movie (2008) and not ABBA: The Movie (1977) which is the normal convention.
Have the EU BD and the Laserdisc and wouldn't spend more again for the same.

Her bottoms top was showing.

The 2008 is referring to the year the Blu-ray came out. The movie is from 1977.

Understand, ABBA: The Movie (2008) is ABBA: The Movie (1977)

Death on the Nile (2022) is Death on the Nile (1978) oops
A Star Is Born (2018) is A Star Is Born (1976) is A Star Is Born (1954)

The three lyric videos mentioned in the trailer will be played after the movie:
Quote:
Don’t miss ABBA: The Movie this Thursday, May 12, and Saturday, May 14, when it dances into theaters across the US, Canada and Puerto Rico.

In addition to the newly remastered film, we are excited to bring fans a post-show sing-a-long featuring the new official lyric videos for “Chiquitita”, “Waterloo” & “Voulez-Vous”.

I saw it tonight. Before the movie there was:
  1. A couple minutes of ABBA trivia (sponsored by ShowScore)
  2. A commercial for the Warner Bros. Studio Tour
  3. A commercial for the upcoming ABBA 10 album box set
  4. A reminder to stay after the movie for the three lyric videos
  5. A note about the restoration (for some reason they didn't mention it was done by Warner or that it was a 2K restoration)
After the movie there was:
  1. Chiquitita lyric video
  2. Waterloo lyric video
  3. Voulez Vous lyric video
The audio on the lyric videos was quite a bit louder than the audio on the movie. All three lyric videos were uploaded to ABBA's YouTube channel a few weeks ago:
https://www.youtube.com/c/OfficialABBA/videos

The new 2K restoration is the usual high quality work we've come to expect from Warner Bros Motion Picture Imaging.

On this new restoration, "Thank You For The Music" is not faded out when the closing credits end like on the blu-ray. Instead the song continues to its end with the theater in darkness.

Quote:
Mother says I was a dancer before I could walk
She says I began to sing long before I could talk
And I've often wondered, how did it all start?
Who found out that nothing can capture a heart
Like a melody can?
Well, whoever it was, I'm a fan
So I say

Thank you for the music, the songs I'm singing
Thanks for all the joy they're bringing
Who can live without it? I ask in all honesty
What would life be?
Without a song or a dance what are we?
So I say thank you for the music
For giving it to me

[The blu-ray ends here. The closing credits end and the song fades out.]

I've been so lucky, I am the girl with golden hair
I wanna sing it out to everybody
What a joy, what a life, what a chance

Thank you for the music, the songs I'm singing
Thanks for all the joy they're bringing
Who can live without it, I ask in all honesty
What would life be?
Without a song or a dance what are we?
So I say thank you for the music
For giving it to me

So I say
Thank you for the music, for giving it to me

[The new restoration ends here. Starting with "I've been so lucky..." the theater is completely dark because the closing credits have ended.]
The ending on this new restoration is probably how the movie originally ended.

The total duration for this event was around 1 hour 48 minutes (the movie and the stuff before and after the movie). There is another showing on Saturday (May 14).

If you are a fan, I would check it out especially to see this new restoration and because this is a 2.35:1 movie. Also, seeing it on the big screen enhances the beginning when
[Show spoiler]the aspect ratio switches to the full 2.35:1 when Bruce Barry says "this is going to be worldwide".

Did it open with a 1970s Warner Bros (Warner Communications) logo?

Yes, it's been out for years, but fans who may want to discuss it here can do so.
I have to admit that I too had to read this whole thread just to confirm what "2008" meant since there's talk here of a remaster as well. "ABBA: The Movie" was released in 1977. "ABBA: The Movie Blu-Ray" was released in 2008.

You got this one right:
Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory 4K UHD (1971)

No. It had no opening logo. I was a little disappointed because I was hoping it would have a vintage Warner opening logo.

Watched this tonight for the first time. I only got into ABBA several years ago and became slightly obsessed.

I've heard bad things about the movie but I thought it was honestly pretty fantastic. The very simple story of the radio man trying to get an interview gave the movie pacing between the concert performances.

I don't know what it is about ABBA but their music makes me emotional and this was no different. Just seeing how happy people were reminded me of better times and how powerful music can be.

You probably need to be an ABBA fan to enjoy this but as the movie shows, the band has wide appeal and I could see someone becoming an ABBA fan from the movie alone.

The Blu-ray visuals are pretty solid but it's the sound where it shines. The audio volume is a bit all over the place with the dialogue being a bit quiet but the concert segments sound excellent and are very enjoyable.

I'm glad I finally got around to it and if you are an ABBA fan, I think it's a must watch if you haven't seen it.

When watching the Blu, don't be tempted by the 5.1 track - it's hollow, lacking body and a poor substitute for the 2.0 version.

I watched it a few months ago, and was blown away by the 2.0 mix - it bolsters the assessment that older stereo tracks have the ability to clean the floor with modern iterations. The placement of sound was constantly surprising, presenting an accurate, wide spread which drops you right in the middle of things, and the fidelity of the sound made the multichannel option seem as though there was an authoring error by comparison. The tone is rich, bass is weighty and it just seems to have the midrange which is sorely lacking on the 5.1 version.
