I always find his awards a bit tedious, they used to be fun when they were on TV, when it was "here's how the Oscars got it wrong" but now they've kinda turned into "the Oscars have my favourites, so here's an obligatory one for a film I like"

Do you get that impression? I definitely got the impression he liked everything that he gave a Kermode Award more than anything that was nominated.

Not really, considering the amount of films nominated that made his end of year list, and just the amount of praise he's thrown at films like Room and Brooklyn. He even said a few times what would have been his pick. A few years ago, he would have been saying that he was shocked such a film didn't get a look in. It also had the added benefit of when it was on TV the winners would actually accept his award, so they felt a little less obsolete as they do now.

I'm pretty when he said "he would chose x" he's just saying if he were voting on the nominees. Though sure - some may also be his absolute favourites.
