Default Punchline (1988)

Mill Creek will be releasing Punchline (1988) starring Tom Hanks, Sally Field, among others.

Quote:
Punchline
(1988) - Color - R
Sally Field, Tom Hanks, John Goodman, Damon Wayans

Field stars as Lilah Krytsick, a New Jersey housewife and mother who desperately wants to make it big as a comedienne. Hanks plays Steven Gold, a self-centered Lenny Bruce-type who's been stealing the spotlight with his irrepressible, natural comedic talent. Drawn to one another, Steven helps the stumbling Lilah turn her routine from flat to funny, while Lilah helps Steven keep his anguished life together.

Great film! Tom Hanks goes against type and plays a real A-Hole and does a great job.

I knew there was a mean streak somewhere beneath all that goodness. Like when Jimmy Stewart played a bad guy. It's scary.

I heard of it, but never saw it. Looks pretty good based off the trailer. I do tend to like Hanks' movies too.

Hanks is brilliant in this. Haven't seen it in years. Can't wait.

Wow, that review is pretty harsh. I watched it tonight and didn't think it was THAT bad. It seemed to be about the same (PQ wise) as Postcards From The Edge. I appears to be the same master used for the DVD. The "oral exam" scene in the beginning has some very distinct blemishes, the same ones evident on the DVD. Definitely disappointing, but not as unwatchable as the review suggests... at least not for a Mill Creek title.

One interesting thing: this has the old Mill Creek logo at the beginning and a static menu. Little Nikita has a new Mill Creek logo and an animated menu.

Just saw Punchline for the very first time. I actually had never heard of the film before this year. Great film! Very funny & poignant at the same time.

I didn't find much of the stand-up that funny, for the most part. However,
I thought Sally Field's stand-up jokes were hilarious - I found myself laughing out loud at them. She definitely had the best routine(s) in the film.

The ending was great - very touching, but the same time somewhat realistic.
[Show spoiler]I.e., I could see why the Sally Fields character didn't want to accept the prize & instead gave it to someone else - given that she had something to fall back on (her family), whereas for others in that business being a comedian was all they had going for them.

I thought this was a well-done & underrated late '80's film, and an interesting examination of stand-up comics & humor in general.
