Question What special features do you actually watch?

Not sure if this is posted elsewhere - I searched and did not see it.

What special features do you actually watch? I will watch a special feature if it expounds on an actual historical account or if it is biographical regarding one of the actors. Other than that, not too many interest me.

Interviews, Behind the scenes.

I'm not too big on extended scenes. I hardly ever watch commentaries, but I want to start. It just seems tedious to sit through a film twice in a short amount of time, once with a talking track over it.

Since retiring, all of them, including the commentaries.

The 2 features on American Sniper were very interesting. A bit repetitive, but interesting. Added to my knowledge of what I'd just seen.

Trailers and deleted scenes for sure. Sometimes I check out commentaries, but I watch so many movies these days that I rarely take the time to watch a movie a second time. Behind-the-scenes stuff isn't really something I check out unless it's a cult, low budget movie and I'm very curious how they got the movie made. Still galleries are a waste of space to me.

FIRST AND FOREMOST: The original trailer, always the trailer no matter what the release. I am fascinated by how a movie was promoted prior to its release, what worked and what didn't. Also, advertising galleries.

SECOND: If it's a historical period piece inspired by fact and they have something about the real events or people they are depicting, I will watch that with great enthusiasm.

OCCASIONALLY: Commentaries, preferring critics or professors to inarticulate cast and crew; making of documentaries that are more than fluff pieces; deleted scenes (preferably with context).

NEVER: Video press releases; current celebrities discussing how a certain movie changed their lives and/or how a certain movie cured cancer; how special effects were achieved (I prefer to be ignorantly dazzled by the magic on screen); anything with John Landis, whom I despise.

Commentaries for certain directors, deleted scenes, and gag reels. I find behind the scenes featurettes are often rather redundant.

I don't watch special features that much anymore but I'll still check out trailers, deleted/alternate scenes, and gag reels are always funny to watch. If I love a movie that much, I'll check out everything it has to offer.

I used to check out behind the scenes stuff all the time, especially with lesser known titles and cult classics and historical pieces.

Theatrical trailers, gag reels, commentaries for sure, and the occasional making of. extended/Deleted scenes sometimes as well.

If there is a feature length documentary like the ones done for Blade Runner, Alien films, Jaws, Full Tilt Boogie, etc I always watch those. Never bother with deleted scenes, gag reels or making of featurettes.

Rarely do I listen to commentary tracks.

All of them! I really do check out all extra features that are available on any given release, though after I view the feature it may take me quite some time (months, or even years) to actually get around to checking out the bonus content.

Same. Commentaries are the only extras I only watch/ listen on occasion.

I've only ever watched One commentary track, and that was for Red vs Blue Season 1 on DVD as I was genuinely interested in how they obtained some of the shots that were in the shorts. With that said, Commentaries are always a no go. (Thus Far).

I tend to watch everything at least once upon first viewing, but the staples that I usually look forward to and will check out on repeat viewings are...

-Trailers
-Deleted Scenes
-Music videos
-Image Galleries

Things I'll sometimes revisit. (If it's Horror related it's almost always watched, all other genres are hit or miss).

-Behind the Scenes featurettes
-Documentaries
-Coming Attractions for other films

I try to go for all them but if it's boring or there is no energy then I'm bailing on it. It saddens me when a disc can tout "new interviews with..." or "new commentary by..." and then that person sounds like he/she doesn't want to be there or, during their commentary, they sit there and watch the movie.

Always: trailer and deleted/alternate scenes. Those are automatic for me, especially if they are presented in HD quality. Its annoying to me when these are left at SD - unless its explicitly stated the film elements were lost/destroyed.

Sometimes: cast or director interviews, these interest me mostly with classic films - not so much with newer films as the interviews are almost PR scripted at this point. I find that interviews about older films are often more candid, and thus more interesting.
I also enjoy documentaries or shorts that get included. Criterion has even taken it beyond the level of short films, and in a few cases included entire feature films as an "extra", I love that.

Almost never: commentary track, I don't know why, but I just can't watch films like this. Doesn't help that most of the ones I attempted to watch were really bad. Usually I end up abandoning them. Again with the newer/modern films, I don't even bother.

  • Alternate cuts of a movie
  • Behind-the-scenes documentaries
  • Gag reels
  • Deleted scenes
  • Short films
  • Bonus TV specials / episodes / shorts / animations
  • Featurettes, infrequently
  • Interviews, infrequently
  • Test screenings or test footage of any kind
  • I used to look at a lot of production design galleries and VFX stuff, not so much anymore
  • Used to watch music videos, not so much anymore
  • Very rarely watch movies with commentaries on
  • Very rarely look at trailers and TV spots
  • Easter eggs, if I can find any
I would look at everything if I could, but I find myself ignoring ads for related products (like any making-of stuff for related video games or other movies or whatnot), and I don't really bother with photo and image galleries much.

The only thing that I tend to not watch are stills gallery. I tend to watch the extra features immediately following the film.

This. I love commentary tracks and Making Of docs. I also like Gag reels for commentaries. I rarely watch Deleted Scenes, for whatever reason, unless they're called out for having something important or worthwhile.
