Metro Goldwyn Mayer The Princess Bride (1987) (30th Anniversary Edition)

MGM/Fox will be releasing a new edition of The Princess Bride for its 30th anniversary. No idea what is new if anything, but I'd expect it to be just a repackaging with a digital copy.

Love the movie, but I'm satisfied with my current copy. No need to upgrade unless it's such a MAJOR improvement and they can show me why my current copy is not as good as I thought.

I'll happily double-dip for a 4K remaster.

Aren't there still special features from the laser disc that have never been on a subsequent release?

Would be nice if they would. MGM makes enough off of this movie. Give people a legit reason to rebuy.

It better be more than just a digital copy added, because this release:

(which I just bought, grr)

is literally the same as this one only with UV added:

I actually bought the top release along with The Final Girls and Ghostbusters double feature because of a gift card last year and now I find out that another version is being released? How much more can possibly be added to this movie? Those two versions can be considered the definitive releases because they include all the special features along with a digital copy. Unless it's a 4K release, I literally see no purpose for this unless they're adding some memorabilia like the 30 year anniversary of Aliens, which would be a complete scam.

Yeah, I bought it alongside Ever After (which was also rereleased with a DC) and Legend. It's a good release and there isn't much to fix apart from ditching the eco-case.

It was a Best Buy gift card given to me as a present, I don't think I would have bought them otherwise because it was three days before the opening weekend of Batman v Superman and I only had enough money for one or the other. It was almost like a miracle

It’ll just be the same disc with the picture slightly altered and some other dainty swirly font used on the cover lol

The top one is supposed to have an extra feature called "The Princess Bride Phenomenon".

There's a UK release which has additional vintage featurettes, so even besides Criterion extras there is stuff they could put on.

These are missing from the US blu releases:

1987 Original Featurette (7:40)
1987 Making of Featurette (6:37)
- International Trailer (2:13)
- TV Spots (2:31)
"Meet Professor Rawscey!" featurette (2:37)

Actually, they both have that same special feature. The bottom one is the 25th anniversary edition that included the new special feature, the top one is just a re-release with a new cover and a UV copy, otherwise they're completely identical.

I'm surprised Shout! Factory hasn't taken a crack at this yet, given all the other big MGM titles they released.

This movie is one of MGM's classics, I highly doubt that they would just hand it over when they still make so much money off of it. Shout Factory still couldn't get the rights to the first Poltergeist and Exorcist and only got their sequels instead.

They can't get the 1st Poltergiest because it's with Warner (who owns the pre-1986 MGM produced catalog) and ditto for the 1st Exorcist (Shout got III because it was a Morgan Creek production that had the rights reverted back from Warner).
