Default Bloodshot 2 - Vin Diesel Returning

Bloodshot Sequel in the Works With Vin Diesel Returning
Sam Stone - November 9, 2020

DMG founder and CEO Dan Mintz confirmed plans for a Bloodshot sequel with Vin Diesel reprising his role as the Valiant Entertainment superhero.

The cinematic adaptation of Bloodshot had the misfortune of opening just as movie theaters worldwide shut down in the face of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. However, a sequel is still in the cards.

Released on March 13, with many theater chains shutting down at the start of the following week, DMG Entertainment and Sony's adaptation of the popular Valiant Entertainment superhero was directly impacted by the move. Fortunately, the studios were able to pivot to a home video release within two weeks of Bloodshot's theatrical opening, moving to VOD platforms and streaming. This quick, adaptive shift proved to be a successful strategy for Valiant parent company DMG, with company founder and CEO Dan Mintz confirming plans for a sequel and expectations for Vin Diesel to reprise his role as the eponymous no-nonsense hero.

"I think [Bloodshot] was very successful in that respect, a lot of people saw it and it did very well in the post-release rollout but you can't use the same evaluation process, pre-COVID, to this," Mintz told CBR. "[Are] Vin Diesel and all those people going to still continue? Yes, because it did so well and the response to it has been so well, it's just that the response has been in a non-transparent environment, as opposed to a transparent environment like box office numbers."

Intended to launch a shared cinematic universe featuring Valiant's extensive library of superheroes, Bloodshot starred Diesel as a soldier killed in action, reborn through advanced cybernetics with a whole host of superhuman abilities. Based on the comic book character created by Kevin VanHook, Don Perlin and Bob Layton in 1992, the film earned $33.48 million at the worldwide box office on a reported production budget of $45 million before theater chains were shuttered to prevent the pandemic's spread.

Despite the COVID-related setbacks with Bloodshot's theatrical run, it appears the Valiant Entertainment adaptation was a strong success on digital platforms, available for audiences to stream since March 24 while raising awareness about the character and the wider Valiant Universe. There are currently no details on which cast and crew members will return alongside Diesel or when a planned sequel is expected to premiere.

Directed by Dave Wilson with a script by Eric Heisserer and Jeff Wadlow, Bloodshot stars Vin Diesel, Guy Pearce and Toby Kebbell.

Was the first one any good? It just looked like Vin Diesel playing Vin Diesel.

Generic is the best to describe it. Every character is a giant cliche and a few are downright annoying.

Wasn't this released pre covid? It tanked, how are they justifying a sequel?

It was released like a week or two before quarantine/shutdown. Doesn't mean it would've been a box office smash, but COVID definitely hurt its numbers.

Yeah, it was released March 13th and the 11th was when everything got serious here (travel ban to Europe, WHO declaring a pandemic, NBA season suspended), and it was simply too late to delay it. Didn’t even have a full week before most theaters shut down.

If it really was a big success on digital, I could see the argument that you can’t count the theatrical release as a traditional flop due to the circumstances

I don't know what it did on rentals/VOD, but I know its North American dvd/blu sale gross was less than $16M, which (when added with the theatrical worldwide gross) makes $53M. It's still upside down with those figures, so the VOD/rentals and other foreign sales would need to be a significant chunk unless they're going to shrink the budget down even more.

True, how could I forget.

Has anything happened with Furya since he announced that in 2016?

Development hell?

I thought I read that Vin didn't like the script but I may be confusing that for something else.

What, that's still going? I honestly loved the first one and stopped by that.

Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick were really good, too. It seems like he went downhill after doing all those F&F movies.

Yup. xXx: Return of Xander Cage (3) was released in 2017. And there were talks of an xXx 4 as recently as May of this year.

Currently FF 9 is in production sans The Rock after he and Statham were spun off into Hobbs & Shaw and are getting a sequel of their own.

Ohh, and FF9 is bringing back Han. So pretend FF 7 & 8 never happened.

This isn't right. He's supposed to reject Bloodshot 2, then when the movies he makes instead tank, he'll return for Bloodshot 3.

The most enjoyable aspects of the otherwise mediocre first installment, Sam Heughan, Toby Kebbell and Eiza Gonzalez, are dead (well, aside from Eiza).

So....not that interested.
