I love special features on blu ray and dvd's. Since I got my Blu Ray player in 2014 I have just been buying blu rays. When it comes to special features sometimes I like to wait a few months or longer before watching them. For instance I got the 70th anniversary blu ray of The Wizard of oz with all the special features included in October of 2014 and only watched the 6 hour documentary "When the Lion Roars" on the included DVD but waited till last weekend to watch a lot of the other special features on the blu ray. On the other hand when I bought the animated blu of Anastasia I watched all the special features right away. Sometimes I just like to know that I can look forward to watching special features at another time. Once I watch the special features I usually don't re-watch them (unlike a movie that I will re-watch). Right now I am waiting to watch special features from numerous Bond films, Mr. Smith goes to Washington and a bunch of other blu ray ones. Just wish all blu's would come with special features. What are you Guys doing?

For movies I love and have seen repeatedly, I always watch the special features first. New special features are the reason I will buy new versions of movies that come out.

I used to watch them all the time when I first started collecting dvds in 01 but I stopped buying new movies for a few years (too many years) Back into purchasing movies again with blus and I do not watch the special features. Sometimes I feel like there isn't as many special features as there used to be on the dvds.

If this is the case, just buy the DVD, if the special features is all you want. You don't need the blu-ray! I can't fathom paying $20.00 for a blu-ray, just for the special features.

It's not like I do it for EVERY movie. Just the ones I love. Example: When I upgraded my Natural Born Killers and Batman Blu-rays to the Diamond Luxe Editions. New special features and I enjoyed the packaging.

I used to watch every single feature when I first started collecting dvds back in the day. I'd also listen to the commentaries a decent bit of the time. However, priorities change and I haven't listened to a single commentary track in over 10 years. It depends on the extras.. if they're a few light making of/behind the scenes bits then I'll watch them right after. But if it's hours and hours of material, I often forget and don't get around to them at all. It's enough investment to sit down and watch 90-120 minutes of a movie these days, let alone the post-show supplements.

I would love an easily searchable/browsable database of all the supplements I have. Sometimes I have a half an hour or an hour to kill and I'll almost always default to some sort of TV episode but I'd love to be able to throw supplements into that mix.

Usually on 2nd or 3rd viewing (i.e. years after the fact).
I think it's fair to say with most discs i *NEVER* watch them. With Criterions a little more than others I will get straight into them. But most of the time if i explore the extras at all it will be on my 2nd or 3rd go around with a blu-ray (and was case for DVD as well). |

I never watch them right away. I buy my Blu-rays for the film. I watch that first ALWAYS. As long as the feature presentation functions without issue, I can then be content to put the disc on my shelf knowing that I don't have to do an exchange on it. Then, after that, if the extras interest me, I'll visit them right away. However, extras are NEVER a determining factor for me purchasing/keeping a Blu-ray.

I watch the film first, and will then watch the special features over the next week or 2 after that. I'm not into listening to the commentaries, so I skip those. I probably wouldn't have the time to listen to them anyway. There's still a large handful of films I have that came with an abundance of great special features I never got around to watching due to lack of time.

The Great Owl's normal routine...
1. Watch the movie itself with undivided attention. 2. Watch the special features as I sit on my sofa with this laptop in my lap and post about said movie on this website or check my email. Ever so often, a special feature is so awesome that I have to stop what I'm doing and watch it with undivided attention as well, but this does not happen often. |

I very rarely ever used to watch them at all - save deleted scenes and bloopers, which I've always watched on every release. However, I've recently (within the last year and a half or so) found myself very interested in the behind the scenes of films. When I get a brand new blu, I try to watch the film and then the special features right away - I'll save the commentary for a later date, though. That said, I still have many blus I haven't watched the features on - most bought before I had much interest in any of it. Of late, whenever I have some time to kill, I try to go back and watch neglected features. Beyond my new found appreciation for the inner workings of films, I find I feel that I've gotten even more of my money's worth out of a blu once I've viewed the features.

The main feature, if there’s an option to watch an alternate cut, I choose the original theatrical first.
Deleted scenes/outtakes/bloopers next. Documentary and featurettes, after that. Audio commentary, production notes and photo galleries last. |
