Universal Studios The Hindenburg (1975)

Walmart Exclusive

https://www.walmart.com/ip/The-Hinde...creen/55212968

Quote:
George C. Scott leads an all-star cast in "The Hindenburg," a gripping suspense thriller that attempts to reveal the intricate plots behind the historic airship disaster of 1937. Assigned as a colonel by the German government to prevent any plans of sabotage during the Hindenburg's transatlantic voyage, Franz Ritter (Scott) suspects everyone aboard the luxury ship, especially a German countess (Bancroft) vehemently opposed to the Nazi regime. Stylishly directed by Robert Wise and co-starring Burgess Meredith, Gig Young, Charles Durning and Richard Dysart, "The Hindenburg" brings to life one of aviation's most infamous events in history and one of the screen's most engrossing mysteries.

Subtitles: English SDH (Subtitles for Deaf and Hearing Impaired), French and Spanish.

Not a great film, but technically impressive. This will certainly be an upgrade from the ancient, non-anamorphic DVD.

I actually saw this in the theater (yeah, I'm that old).

I agree that's it's a mild snoozer. Most of the film is vignettes of fictional character stories. But it has great old-school effects and should look very impressive on a big TV or projector. Definite buy for me.

As an aside, while thought of as a historical disaster, it was a minor event as transportation disasters go...97 people on board and 62 of them survived. If that was a modern airliner, it would barely be a one day story. But seeing an 800 foot long gas bag go up in flames certainly makes a big impression.

Hopefully, my local Wal-Mart will have it on release day. They seem to be pretty good at stocking the exclusives.

The non-anamorphic DVD is one of the worst looking ever released. Hopefully this will look decent. Universal has had some decent looking catalog titles this year. Yes, David Shire's score is great.

The ending of the movie is so wacky. DEAD DEAD DEAD SURVIVED.
[Show spoiler]At least the dog made it. Or, should I say, SURVIVED.

Excellent news. The German bluray sports a beautiful transfer and superb audio. I hope we get that version.

Cool, another Robert Wise film on Blu-Ray. Not one of his best but still a decent movie. But again his best films are bonafide classics and great movies.

I'm in, saw this in the theater also. My dad was big in the RC Airplanes and one of the monthly magazines had a large story on how this movie was made.

They actually had a RC Hindenburg fly in some of the scenes. I can't wait to see this on Bluray.

But Universal sneaked out an anamorphic transfer

I also saw this in the theater back in 75. I was only 7, but I saw this with my mother, and I thought it was great. Even then I loved history related stories.
I can understand why some would find this film slow or uninteresting, but for me it stands out as one of those pentacle films from my childhood.
I personally am looking forward to getting this on bluray. I never got the dvd release.

I always wondered about this disc. It seemed weird that they'd make a new anamorphic transfer for such an obscure catalog title, Did anyone here own this reissue DVD? Is is possible it was just a labeling error and that it was the same 4:3 letterboxed disc? I only ever owned that first disc and now the German BD.

Funny, I was about to make a very similar post. I was 14 however when I first saw this with my parents and I dug it as well. I was a weird kid though, I also enjoyed listening to old radio shows on Vinyl like The Shadow, Lone Ranger, and Superman. I was also probably one of the few kids my age who knew who Fibber McGee & Molly and Baron Munchausen were.

Good film. I already have the German BD which has a really nice transfer.

I'm assuming that the US release will be using the same transfer so probably no need for me to get this.

I saw this on opening day which was Christmas Day 1975. I asked my parents to drop me off for the matinee so I could escape annoying relatives that had invaded our home for the holiday.

It was playing on only one screen on Long Island, the huge and beautiful UA Cinema 150 and I couldn't believe it, but it sold out. I may have only been 13 years old but to my eyes, the movie was massive and spectacular. The screenplay does drag a bit and it is slow at times, but the cinematography, musical score, art direction, performances, direction, costumes, editing and special effects are top notch and astonishing.

It was amazing seeing this film projected in that magnificent theatre that now has been converted into a fitness center.

Really miss those huge one screen theaters with those immense balconies.

I had to wait for the day after Christmas. Took the bus to the Bruin theatre in Westwood. I was 12 years old at the time and was on an allowance, otherwise I would have gone to see The Man Who Would be King at the Village theatre across the street afterwards.
