I couldn't find it locally so I had to order it from Amazon. I won't have it until Friday.

Edit: Found it on the way home from work (at BB) and couldn't resist getting it so I'll watch it tonight.

It's definitely an improvement over the DVD and looks pretty good.

It's Warner so it's using VC-1 for the video. The audio is just dobly digital. That's probably my main complaint but even so, the audio was still pretty good.

Default Possible Spoiler

This movie was completely lame. The entire scenario was so completely lacking in realism that all suspense was completely sucked out of it. It was hard to judge PQ on my Sony KDLXBR2 52", since the entire movie was very dark and blue tinted, but it seemed okay, and the DD 5.1 sound contibuted minimally to the experience.

Possible Spoiler Follows:

The way in which Halle Berry's character ended up in the psychiatric hospital was completely unbelievable. Three days after seizing and becoming delusional, she would still have been in a real hospital under guard, still being diagnosed. Furthermore, psychiatric hospitals in the modern age are not conducted like prisons, like this one was, and an individual would not have been sent to a hospital for the criminally insane until proven criminally insane, anyway. As a former caregiver in that institution, she never would have been housed with the same inmates that she had been intimately involved with in the past. The doses of medications given in the movie were sometimes multiples of what it would take to kill a person. These are just the tip of the iceberg. I understand that cinema is often fantasy, but some semblance of accuracy is required to give credibility to your story and show the audience that you give a rat's arse about their intelligence.

Also, character development was completely absent, and the acting was nonexistent.

This was a complete waste of time.

But Halle Berry's hotness makes up for it all.

But you can hardly see her in this movie, and when you can, she's a total mess.

While I appreciate your point, I'd have to say that accuracy in film isn't tops on my priority list. I don't watch movies to have my intelligence tested, I watch them to be entertained. That being said, this movie sucked.

-i don't know she looked pretty good curled up on the shower floor. buy it, i think for both pq & aq it is one of Warner's best efforts. as far as the movie itself i like the (sci-fi / who done it) story. more to it then just blood and guts.

Does anyone own this? How is the pq? I never owned the DVD but I saw it in theatres and enjoyed it. The person who reviewed it in this thread just reviewed the movie.

Bit late, but, the UK release which I own has way better AQ, and, in my opinion, PQ!

I think Sony released it in the UK, while Warner had it in America. It was one of those very early Blu-ray efforts from Warner, when they really did not support the format very well.

I rented the HD DVD or the Blu years ago and I don't know what to say other than it looked typical for what you would have seen from non-catalog titles from Warner at the time. I rented it but didn't like it enough to buy.

Can anyone try to tell me, once and for all, what the meaning of the title is? Gothika isn't even a word.

The only thing I can figure is that it's a derivative of "gothic." In a sense, the movie does adhere to the traditional definition of a gothic horror story--it has the gloomy atmosphere, a violent and gory backstory, and elements of the supernatural. The movie's primary setting--an insane asylum--is pretty typical for gothic stories, especially since madness often takes over certain characters (and in some cases, including this movie, turns them into unreliable narrators). Adding "ika" to the end of it merely updates the word for modern times, and I'm sure the title was merely made up as a catchy, modernized hook to lure a modern horror-movie audience.

On the other hand, I think it's more likely a bunch of marketers gathered together, decided to try and sell the movie to the goth crowd (teens and young adults who obsess over heavy metal and vampires and stuff), so they came up with this name. Which is far cheesier, imo.
