I was watching this the other day on TCM and thinking to myself-"Why isn't this out on Bluray yet?" A great film with the hurricane sequence that's still impressive almost 80 years later! I have to confess that watching it does make me a little antsy since hurricane season just started and this is an El Niño year....

This is a Goldwyn title. I wonder if Goldwyn's deal with Warner is lapsing and the titles are going with Kino. Warner's output has not been strong. Goldwyn has many classic titles like The Little Foxes, Wutherhing Heights, Ball of Fire, Stella Dallas, Pride of the Yankees. None of which have had Blu ray releases.

I haven't watched my long OOP HBO DVD of this title in many years, but I seem to remember it having a pretty cool stereo remix on it, maybe Chace? The Laserdisc also had it, if I remember right. It had a nice effect during the climactic hurricane sequence.

Just received my copy today. Curious note: the package gives the original running time of 110 minutes, but the actual running time is 104 minutes.
IMDb gives the running time as: 1 hr 50 min (110 min) 1 hr 40 min (100 min) (West Germany) 1 hr 43 min (103 min) (video) 1 hr 44 min (104 min) (TCM print) (USA) The AFI Catalog says: "Duration (in mins): 102-103 or 110" I'm not sure if the longer running time was for a preview version, or whether the film was cut after release. I can't seem to find any info to suggest either case. Anyone know for sure? I'll have to dig up my HBO/Goldwyn Classics DVD to see what its running time is, though I'm betting it'll be the shorter one. |

I just finished watching my Kino Lorber Blu-ray of The Hurricane (1937).
On the South Pacific French colony island, Manakoora, John Hall plays Terangi, a Polynesian sailor who marries a fellow native, played by the gorgeous Dorothy Lamour. Soon after the marriage, though, he is wrongfully arrested in Tahiti and sentenced to a prison work camp while the French governor, DeLaage (played by Raymond Massey), rules Manakoora with a stern hand. Terangi eventually escapes, but his return to the island coincides with a horribly destructive hurricane. This adventure thriller/romance/disaster flick was directed by the amazing John Ford (The Searchers, Stagecoach, The Quiet Man), and, as with all Ford films, it benefits from a superb supporting cast. The beautiful Mary Astor (The Maltese Falcon) plays the governor's sympathetic wife, while the always-amazing Thomas Mitchell (Gone with the Wind, High Noon, It's a Wonderful Life) plays an island doctor. C. Aubrey Smith (Rebecca) plays the island priest. Finally, the legendary John Carradine (The Grapes of Wrath, Stagecoach) plays a sadistic prison warden. Although this is a 1937 black-and-white film, it features some incredible special effects for the actual hurricane that takes up the final 20 minutes of the film, and the scenes of wind and waves ravaging the island are quite intense even by today's standards. The hurricane scenes, which were created using a combination of miniature building sets and studio sets with stunt actors struggling against wind machines, really pack quite a punch. This under-recognized classic jumps to the top tier on my list of favorite disaster films. It's really something else. The Kino Blu-ray of The Hurricane hits all of the right notes, with a naturally filmic transfer of the black-and-white images, and with audio quality that is good enough for me not to miss subtitles. Joseph McBride, a historian of Ford films, provides an engaging commentary track. |
