United Kingdom Southern Comfort (Walter Hill)

Second Sight via Facebook:

"Another classic we're currently working on is Walter Hill's cult favourite SOUTHERN COMFORT, scheduled for UK Blu-ray and DVD release by the end of the year. Walter Hill very kindly granted a rare interview for us and will feature in a 40 minute documentary, 'Who Will Live, Who Will Die' in which he talks about the making of this legendary film"

Being that Second Sight released this, can anyone confirm if this has the work-around that RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD has (going to MAIN MENU will bypass the region B lock on ROTLD)?

Just got this in the other day. I have both the Second Sight and Shout Factory. Second Sight kills the Shouts by a landslide in IQ. The Shout disc is very dark the first 10 minutes. Really bad! Wished I bought this one at first =(

Personally I thought the Shout looked better, but the opening is very different in appearance to the Second Sight. Is it not meant to be darker as it's so early in the morning perhaps?

The Second Sight appears to have been filtered/DNR'd a little bit in some scenes, the Shout has better grain in this comparison for example:

http://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=1&x=...1&l=0&i=9&go=1

and here:

http://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=1&x=...9&l=0&i=8&go=1

Also, the white's have been clipped a bit in some scenes, so you see more detail in the sky here, as well as slightly better colour and overall detail:

http://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=1&x=...2&l=0&i=3&go=1

I also generally prefer the colour in the Shout, like in this shot, the green uniforms and skin tones look much better to me:

http://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&a...=83030&i=1&l=0

The Shout does appear to have been zoomed to fill 16:9 screens though, so you miss a tiny bit of image on the sides, but you get a bit more at the bottom. Ultimately, they aren't drastically different apart from the opening minutes, so whichever you prefer comes down to personal preference.

It's a tale of two ills as it looks like with the Shout you're also faced with hideous compression like this:

http://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=1&x=...5&l=0&i=5&go=1

http://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=2&x=...5&l=0&i=5&go=1

I've got both, and I prefer the look of the Shout - the SS looks a bit thin and faded - but I wish they hadn't cropped it, I know it's only a tiny amount but it really does make a difference in some shots.

The stereo* mix on this disc is downright terrible, I will never go through that again. Will give this away and put a potential future 4K release on my wish list... hopefully released by someone competent. I hear the Shout release has better sound (mono)

* correction - dual mono
