Japan Dune (David Lynch)

Happinet will release David Lynch's Dune (1984) on Blu-ray in Japan on August 4th, 2015, as a 30th Anniversary Edition.

It appears this release will include both the 137-minute theatrical cut, and a 189-minute TV version in 4:3 and possibly in SD resolution. There will be about 45 minutes of video extras, some of which will be in French. All extras will have DTS-HD MA 2.0 audio.

The edition on Amazon at the present time will also include a presently unknown amount of post cards as a pre-order bonus, but it is not indicated as an Amazon Exclusive.

Looks promising, but I'll hold off until I find out it's a better transfer than the most current Studio Canal international release, which has blown out brightness and washed out color. Not nearly as good as even Universal's US release.

What are the chances of the extended TV cut being on blu ray? I'll be disappointed if it ends up in SD on a DVD, in this set. At the price the set is going for, I'm crossing my fingers.

I do. I have this and the US Universal edition. I haven't had a chance to watch the Japanese disk all the way through, but I've watched the first 10 minutes or so and both look similar in terms of colour and contrast. I think the Japanese disk has slightly better compression (comparing freeze frames), but not a massive difference in motion.

I can take some screenshots with vlc if you want.

I can't really comment on audio as my setup isn't great.

I scanned the first bit of the disk 1:

The TV version is a 4:3 upscale to 1080i. Again it has a huge bitrate, but it's not native 1080.

Wow that bitrate will surely do wonders for the compression on such a long movie. Would love some screencomparions JP vs US.

So there is no english hardcoded subs where there need to be on JP disc?

The TV version is a 4:3 upscale to 1080i. Again it has a huge bitrate, but it's not native 1080.

So there is no english hardcoded subs where there need to be on JP disc?
TBH I don't know. I still haven't had a chance to sit down and watch it all the way through. If there's a particular time to check let me know and I'll have a look.

Okay, sorry about the delay! Here are some screencaps of the Japanese and US blu-rays. These were captures taken using vlc and I didn't have time to match captures exactly, so there's plenty of salt required!

As you can see there are no night-and-day differences between the two. Personally, I think the JP disk just wins it, but not by much.
