Default Space Battleship Yamato 2202: Warriors of Love

As we are only a month or two away from the launch of Space Battleship Yamato 2202 and the news should be forthcoming any time now, I thought I'd whip up a thread!

Here's a couple of teaser trailers:

By the way, if you've not checked out the most excellent Yamato 2199 - you'd do well to find it. It's a pain in the ass, seeing as it's not really been released over here (sort of) - but worth tracking down

I will probably pick up the first disc blind on the hopes that it will indeed be subtitled. Given the choice between no Star Blazers and Star Blazers I have to muddle my way through with a printed up subtitle script, I'll take the print out any day of the week.

Hmm, why does the title screen say "Starblazers"?

They incorporated it into the title because of international appeal as well as the fact that there is a Hollywood movie in development.

Which is just weird. I'm a Star Blazers fan, it was my gateway drug into Anime - but even I recognize that the brand in america has been pretty much dead since 1993 when the VHS came out and there was a brief resurgence of marketing. There's very little nostalgia attached to the name, and most modern fans would prefer the original Japanese branding.

If they really want to cling to the old american series, Voyager would do a dubbed track with Wildstar and Desslok and Argo, and leave the subs Kodai and Dessar and Yamato. That was both sides get served, the fans get the nostalgia kick and the purists get the unlocalized version. But that would require Voyager to stop competing with Harmony Gold as the Shittiest Anime Company on the Planet.

Is Voyager even still around as a functioning entity? Their Starblazers website is still around but hasn't had any activity since Aug 2014. It's tragic that the North American rights are stuck in this suspended state of purgatory.

Sort of. As I understand it, Voyager is a Japanese company and the Star Blazers branch is just their North American offices. They shut those down in '14 to focus on the movie, but still operate out of Japan.

A new 15 second television spot:

And I love that the movie posters for 2202 is a modern version of the old Arrivederci Yamato posters:

A couple of new clips, including the reunion on Hero's Hill:

And then there's this. Is it an alarm clock? An air purifier? Night light? Hell if I know - but damn if I don't want one!

Still no word on subs or not (I've rolled the dice and preordered the first disc at least), but here's some specs from ourstarblazers.com:

The official website published the specs for Chapter 1 on this day. An indicator for English subtitles still stubbornly refused to appear, but there will be plenty of other delights:

External slipcase art by Makoto Kobayashi, interior sleeve art by Nobuteru Yuuki (characters) and Kia Asamiya (mecha).

Content: Episodes 1 and 2, clean OP and ED titles, production presentation video (from Sept. 2016), teasers and trailers, audio commentaries.

Limited edition bonus items: Episode 1 storyboard book and script book. Continuing with the 2199 tradition, the cover for the storyboard book is by Nobuteru Yuuki. See an enlargement of it at the end of this page.

Limited edition sold in theaters from February 25, general edition March 24. Preorder from Amazon.co.jp or from CD Japan .

It was later announced that the general edition will come with other bonus items depending on the source. Yamato Crew will include the script book, Yamada will add a clear file, and the Amazon.co.jp version will come with a CD containing an audio drama by Harutoshi Fukui.

I've got the first disc preordered too. I'm optimistic for subtitles since they have "Star Blazers" included in the title treatment.

Behold! The first 10 minutes!

So - couple of things

* So I wonder how they will handle stealing the Argo? In the original the Earth Commanders were all "Sorry, we don't believe that there is a new and powerful unknown force out there. You can't go to Telezart to check out this mysterious message." when clearly there is a threat and the Earth fleet just engaged them and the Gamalons know all about them. Will they go with a 'turtle up and hope the Comet Empire doesn't bother them' defensive stance? That sending the Star Force out would antagonize them?

* Zordar's throne room is totally pimp!

* Hey! The Comet Empire totally stole Sandor's "cover the ship in asteroids" gimmick!

* Holy crap! The Comet Empire has a Death Blossom!

* And suddenly Starsha's fears are realized when (presumably) Captain Gedion blew up a planet simply because it was in the way.
