The Continental | John Wick Prequel Series

While we wait for John Wick: Chapter 4, The Hollywood Reporter brings us an update on “The Continental” today, the spinoff project that was originally announced a while back.

For starters, “The Continental” is now a prequel event series, THR notes, and there are reportedly going to be “three installments” in total. Each one being feature length, however.

The Hollywood Reporter details, “Continental, which is set in the unique hotel for assassins in the Wick movies, was initially envisioned as spinoff series but was redeveloped as a three-night event series with movie length and movie budgets. The installments are to run about 90 minutes in length and, according to sources, have budgets upwards of $20 million.”

The site’s report continues, “A prequel spinoff, Continental is set 40 years before the events of the Wick series and focuses on a young man named Winston. He will one day grow up to be the character played by Ian McShane in the Wick movies but in the prequel’s story is a young man starting as a hitman hotelier who, along with others, create a haven for unsavory types, all set against a backdrop of 1970s New York.”

Hughes will direct the first and third episode while executive producing all three. A director for episode two has not yet been chosen. (×}

The three 90 minute thing has me really optimistic in this. They could have very easily ran this out into a 6 episode thing and splurge all their money on a pilot and climax and lull inbetween. But three mini-movies seems to imply a bit of balance and consideration in the craft of each episode. Should be interesting.

Trailer looks good, albeit not John Wick good, so I’ll keep my expectations in check.
