Default One thing that DVD has over Blu-ray

I know that Blu-rays are very hard to scratch compared to DVDs, but when the discs actually have scratches, DVDs have the advantage. I have DVDs that are scratched up all over and they play flawlessly, yet if a Blu-ray has even a tiny scratch I can almost guarantee that it will have some playback issues from my own experience. It is frustrating as this is supposed to be the superior format, yet it is inferior to DVDs in this regard. It especially sucks when you have a larger collection and you finally get around to watching a blu-ray only to find out it won't play because of a tiny scratch and its outside of the return window.

Rant over.

I must say, my experience has been the opposite. I had so many new DVD's that were unplayable due to scratches or other strange marks on the disc. Or, sometimes new discs would just freeze up for seemingly no reason at all. The only problem disc I ever had on Blu-ray (in my large collection) was a TT disc (Lenny) that had a strange bubble in the data area that caused it to freeze and skip.

Perhaps that depends on the player? If I shut my Oppo off while in the middle of playing a Blu-ray it always resumes where I left off when I turn it back on.

The only advantage of DVD I can find and agree with is resuming of your place, even if you turn the player and power strip off. Also, I've had player lock up trying to change audio tracks with a blu-ray....never with a DVD. Bad coding maybe, but still.

Better yet ~ My new Samsung player I paid 69 dollars for asks me every time if I want to resume or go back to the main menu This is even with disc's I have not played on it

Not bad IMO & I am not a gamer

I'm with the OP. I love how durable BDs are but I was very surprised at how finicky they can be. Forget scratches, I've had them refuse to load or freeze up because of fingerprints.

Don't get me wrong, I'll take 'virtually indestructible but touchy' any day of the week but it was definitely an adjustment.

This. So many movies released on blu-ray that don't have the extras that were available on dvd...

Honestly, I still don't understand why people complain about the durability of optical media. The discs are packaged in protective boxes which prevent against damage.

(Granted if it's rentals, I get the complaint. I've had rental discs freeze up on me because apparently some people are too dim to hold a disc by the edges and center hole!)

Never had a problem with Blu-Rays getting scratched at all. The one I had that was scratched (used rental) still played.

Then again, none of this would be a problem if they made a good repair kit for Blu-Rays. My SkipDr. has kept all my DVDs and CDs going for years. I guess it's not possible for BDs?

Sh!t happens. Trying to be so careful all the time I inevitably drop a disc, read side down, of course..

Yes it does. I have one of the first Oppo 103s, and it depends on the disc.
Mary Shelly's Frankenstein for example...no resume.
