Post Universal Studios is NOT critical to my movie collection

I did a brief inventory of my DVD collection this weekend. I was curious about the impact of Universal and titles that I would probably repurchase in HD.

Out of 200 DVDs in my collection, here are my 23 Universal titles:

Apollo 13
Back to the Future 1
Back to the Future 2
Back to the Future 3
The Birds
End of Days
The Frighteners
Jurassic Park 1
Jurassic Park 2
Jurassic Park 3
King Kong
The Last Starfighter
Meet Joe Black
Mulholland Drive
The Mummy 1
The Mummy 2
Peter Pan
Send Me No Flowers
Thorougly Modern Millie
The Thrill of it All
Torn Curtain
U-571
Vertigo

Of those, I would probably repurchase all but 5. Some titles I don't really care about anymore or would not have replay value to me.

Several months ago I stopped getting DVD releases in anticipation of buying into Blu-ray. I will hold off on buying ANY Universal titles until they support Blu-ray. I can play my current Universal movies on my upscaling BD player and can get new Universal DVDs from Netfilx. I am perfectly happy with this arrangement for the short-term future. This means that Universal won't be making much money off me until they come on board.

I won't buy into both formats. From the beginning I felt that Blu-ray had the best chance for success and the most promise to be a long-lived format. If I were an HD-DVD supporter, I'd almost have to support both formats because I couldn't live with a smaller library of HD movies available to collect.

I'm glad I chose Blu-ray, because ~90% of the movies I want to buy in Hi Def are going to be available for sure.

I think that if enough of us Blu-ray owners do the same thing, we can help force this format war to an end.

Just my thoughts . . .

Glad Universal isn't essential for you but they certainly are for me.

For starters the Jurassic Park & Back To The Future trilogies alone make them notable IMO. Not forgetting how many great Hitchcock films they own.

now if a hd-dvd supporter were to say that they would be arrogant or..

I don't want to get personal - but not one HD-DVD supporter has reported a DVD collection that supports their decision. Almost every single consumer alive who has DVDs has MORE DVDs from studios that support Blu-ray. It is only the VERY short sighted individuals who go "But they have more movies right now, this second, that I want to buy." Those are the people who will get burned the most seriously in this format war and I frankly have very little respect for them.

That's so weird because I did the same thing last night - I'm at work now so I can't post my list, but I did note that I was going "Yes!" to knowing that the movie would be available on Blu-ray 90 times more than I was going "Damn!" seeing a Universal DVD.

Gladiator is one that I'm sad I can't yet look forward to.

I know Red Dragon was Universal, but Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal were both MGM.

its likely that the new evil dead http://imdb.com/title/tt0434020/ is going to be released by Sony since Sam Raimi owns the rights and he is doing the spiderman thing with sony now. however Raimi wont be directing it

Guys forgive me ignorance but why are other studios releasing their films on both formats but Universal won't? Also does it make sense for those studios who are supporting BR to be releasing their films on HD-DVD?

Well, I got to be honest, not having Universal onboard sucks for me. No movie library is complete without some Spielberg films...

E.T.
Jaws
Schindler's List
Jurrasic Park

The other kicker is Dreamworks. I know films like Gladiator and Saving Private Ryan are technically Dreamworks, but doesn't Universal own them or handle their distribution?

Granted, I have all of these on DVD, but it's just not the same. The one thing that gives me comfort, is that their support is inevitable. It's just a matter of when they'll support Blu-Ray, not if.

I got three words for you: Borat make glorious!

Just found out that Borat, the weekend's box office hit, is a Fox release. Can we say Ka-ching!?

^^ Pretty compelling list of titles.

I suspect by the time we see some of those obvious big ones that this so-called format war will be over with.

Let's see how many copies of "X3" Fox sells by the end of the month, I know I've said this elsewhere but surely that movie is going to rewrite HD sales records as an obvious choice for PS3 purchasers.

I bet Universal will be keeping an eye on this too.
