China Lucy (2014) and Taken 3 (2014) [No 3D Blu-ray]

Just saw this write-up on the Slash Film website and thought I'd share...

- Bryan Mills is badass enough in two dimensions, but Chinese and French audiences will get to see him in three. EuropaCorp has announced that Taken 3 will open in IMAX 3D in China. It’ll also play in 3D in France, after its 2D debut last month.

The company made the decision after Luc Besson’s Lucy hit IMAX and 3D in China and became the most successful Chinese debut ever for a French film. “We are very careful with 3D,” said EuropaCorp CEO Christophe Lambert. “Lucy‘s 3D version was praised by industry professionals and the audience wherever it was screened. And so will Taken 3.” [THR] -

Wondering if they will be producing 3D versions on BluRay over there. More to import!

From the Hollywood Reporter -

Taken 3 will be shown in 3D in China, as EuropaCorp will release the latest installment of LiamNeeson's trilogy in the enhanced format.
This follows the blockbuster release of Luc Besson's Lucy on 6,000 3D and Imax 3D screens across China, which nabbed $20 million in ticket sales in its first weekend. It was the most successful launch of all time for a French film in China. It took in over $44.8 million at the box office there and went on to $458.8 million worldwide.
Foreign audiences have been taken with the Olivier Megaton-directed actioner so far – adding $82.4 million from its release across some European territories to its $168.4 million global box-office haul so far.
Following the success of Lucy's release in 3D both in China and Besson's home country of France, “Some territories have shown strong interest in distributing Taken 3 in 3D, alongside its 2D release," said EuropaCorp chief marketing officer Fabrice Denizot.
The film will also get a theatrical release in France, and additional markets for the DVD release.
"We are very careful with 3D. When a 3D version is considered to bring even more intensity to the film, we are working very closely with filmmakers to ensure a great visual experience. Lucy's 3D version was praised by industry professionals and the audience wherever it was screened. And so will Taken 3," said EuropaCorp CEO Christophe Lambert.
Taken 3 will be released in China with its local partner, Fundamental Films, which also partnered with EuropaCorp on the release of Lucy.

If it follows the NOAH path (a surprisingly good conversion), then there'll be a 3D BD release...just not in the U.S.

Taken 3 in 3D? I can't imagine a positive experience considering the amount of fast-paced cuts and shaky cam that that film uses. Didn't enjoy Lucy that much, but I can see that film being a good fit for the 3D format.

urbeenjammin: you are an import NINJA so if anyone is going to find 3D BDs for Lucy it will be you.

Please let us know when you find it (and let us know where to purchase it).

It would be nice to be able to see these hit the light of day on compatible blu ray 3D soon. Especially Robocop. It'd be cool if China did the conversion before these films were released in the world, and offer it for rental to theater chains as a bonus option. But only if the 3D is medium to strong 3D. Mild 3D will only hurt 3D's reputation IMO.

Robocop imho would not work well in 3d given how ti is shoot and it will have had a cheap crummy 3d conversion based on who it was for and where it was done.

Lucy on the other hand has potential due to how it was shoot, but it is a 2d film and I can't see much money having been spent on a 3d conversion. It only cost $40 million to make and the 3d was only done for china (and maybe france/germany).

Mild 3d whilst rare, can work extremely well. It is one of those areas though that you better have a well thought out reason to go mild and do a good job with it. Strong 3d is preferential for most films though. As their is little point making a 3d film that is essentially a 2d film. The only great example of mild 3d throughout that I can think of is Tron Legacy and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, but few films can haver such talented cinematographers attached.

Plus DAWN was actually filmed with 3D cameras and so was not shot as a 2D movie

Yep same with Tron Legacy. If you go with lease depth the film has to be native. Where as stronger 3d can get away with conversions as the conversion errors take away less then the extra depth adds. Native is always best though. We just need some more film makers to shoot native and not be scared of depth.

I would've been interested in a 3D version if it was at least medium 3D, but haven't heard anything about the 3D.

Taken 3, I agree, the editing is so fast that while it can be seen in 3D, there would be less than 1/2 a second to enjoy each 3D shot unless pressing pause a lot during the action.

China really needs to release all of its 3D conversions on region-free 3D Blu-Ray. There's no reason to not have them available for the rest of the world to enjoy.

I've seen Battle Royale and it's horrible, it includes all sorts of off-set errors throughout.

I checked a big China distributor store of 3D movies and nothing was listed for Robocop 3D for example. It's possible it was a fast conversion and not worth offering on home video. Not sure.

That would make sense...makes me wish someone would give them real, full-blown conversions for everyone to have someday.

Agreed. Sometimes China might not want a film till it's ready in 3D, since the 3D market is so big there right now. But no better way to keep the China audience more interested than by offering stronger 3D compared to if they kept getting mild, barely 3D efforts.
