Must be the glue/adhesive used to bind the layers together.
Now are these DVD18s? Dual sided/dual layered?
This would've been better asked in the DVD sub-forum, perhaps.

They have episodes on both sides. Seems more and more episodes won't play over time.

Optical disks are not intended to last indefinitely. They suffer from what's known as 'CD' or 'DVD' rot. This is where "a gradual deterioration of the data-carrying layer. It's not known for sure how common the blight is, but it's just one of a number of reasons that optical discs, including DVDs, may be a lot less long-lived than first thought."

I didn't pull this from my hair but rather I did an online search for this information and I found an article here:

http://www.nbcnews.com/id/4908081/ns.../#.VnIBCr8pf4Y

The article goes on to state that bad optical disks can also be affected by how the owner of the optical disks treat their CD's and DVD's. But, they don't have an extended shelf life. Best bet is to make backups of your content after a period of time, or re-purchase your factory produced CD's and DVD's.

I've had one DVD ( Apollo 13 ) go bad. I got it when it first came out and it played fine. I only touched the disc once to put it into my DVD changer. I went to watch it again one day and it wouldn't play. I took it out of the changer to look at it and it had no visible signs of damage. I tried it in many other players with no luck. I'll eventually replace it with a blu-ray.

The "rot" and "discoloration" depends on manufacturing, the usual term for it is "bronzing" (where the deterioration starts at the edges, and works its way in, and has a bronze discoloration). The same case as with CDs (notably from Polygram, decades ago). Using the wrong materials, the underlying surface (under the plastic) will deteriorate. This is a known phenomenon when the manufacturer uses the wrong combination of materials to manufacture the discs.

Most important is that the studios or companies issuing these discs usually take responsibility for the error. From CDs to DVDs to BDs, you can return the discs, or simply report the problem, and get a replacement disc. I have done this with Hyperion (CDs), and for DVDs/BDs, Paramount, Criterion, and Acorn. In each case, the company was fully aware of the problem, and would replace discs with no trouble.

As with Pologram CDs, the Criterion BD discs were manufactured in the wrong combination, resulting in this bronzing

That works for scratches but if the disc isn't scratched I wouldn't count on it. I tried it with an unreadable unscratched disc once and it didn't worked but years later I found out it was the player.

Yeah, some DVD's won't work - or will freeze/screw up in certain places without being scratched. In some of these cases the DVD's look fine & don't have any discoloration, etc. Not sure why this happens.

Haven't noticed this problem nearly as much with Blu's, however.

You could always try to make a backup.

I've had two go bad.

one was blast from the past i purchased in 1996 on dvd contacted new line cinema (i guess now WB).

they replaced it this was maybe in 2014

i have the superman ultimate collectors edition, one disc don't play like 50 mins of the movie and many discs in the set are cloudy and discolored. they are sending me a different superman set on bluray since they don't have those sets anymore. but this time it was def. a pain in the arse to get this done.

i also had the charmed complete series that came in the book of shadows where so many of the discs was scratched becasue of the packaging, wb replaced those as well.

ryan

i guess over all i've been lucky but then again i could have many thats bad and i just don't know it. like blast from the past i didn't know it was bad until i went to watch it.
