That's silly, it was far from being a atrocity. I think Disney does pretty good job at dubbing Ghibli films.

Yeah, I thought everyone did a standup job in this. Certainly not the best English dubbing that Disney has done for a Ghibli film (I'd say that honor goes to Spirited Away), but I had no problems with anyone.

Executive Producer, English-Language Version: Frank Marshall

Actually, the English dub to The Wind Rises is produced by Frank Marshall (who has overseen the English dubs of Ghibli's films since Ponyo) and Studio Ghibli (their International Distribution head, Geoffrey Wexler, serves as producer for this English dub), and directed by Gary Nydstrom (who is more known for his sound design work, but has directed four Ghibli English dubs so far).

Disney appears to be have minimal to no involvement in Ghibli's recent English dubs, especially since Frank Marshall also served as Executive Producer for From Up on Poppy Hill's English dub (which was distributed by GKids instead of Disney).

Here's a recent article about the dubbing process for The Wind Rises: http://www.vulture.com/2014/02/how-t...o-english.html

Not sure how kids will enjoy it but I really liked this movie. The dreams and earthquake sequences in particular. I got a kick out of seeing Werner Herzog voice act a character. Now I want to see the other Ghibli movies..

Herzog was pretty interesting to watch in Jack Reacher, and he certainly brings that to Castrop in the English dub. The fact that he's also a filmmaker also aids the mystery surrounding the character's reasons for being in Japan.

Definitely a departure from your usual Miyazaki film. For those who have been complaining that he has been in a rut and is repeating himself, you have no excuses when it comes to The Wind Rises. It's not even preachy--in fact, the complaints are that they wished it was *more* UNSUBTLE about its politics. Which means he must have got something right here.

Don't know where to rank this film right now in the Miyazaki pantheon. My opinion right now is that it's one of the great Miyazaki's, and it will be respected, but it won't be totally loved by most fans. It's very dense and has a lot of themes and ideas you could talk about, but you could also say the lead character is quite detached (which makes sense, as he lives in his head and for his planes). One thing I love is how gloriously indulgent the film is about the aerial engineering aspects of the story. It's got a ton of scenes devoted to the working out of engineering problems which makes it so hardcore old-school geeky. I think this film would be an engineer's dream come true--it doesn't matter what KIND of engineer, it's the passion displaying for great mechanical design and problem solving.

The more time I think about this movie the more appreciation I have for it. It's definitely different from the usual Ghibli film but just as good. I cant wait to see it again.

I posted my mini review in the Ghibli thread before I saw this one. If anyone wants to read my 2 cents, its there.

I will sort of repeat myself here if that is ok.

I really liked the film but did have a few issues with it. The animation was amazing. I did not have a problem with the voice cast at all. I think there was only a few shots here and there where the lips moved but there was no dialogue spoken.

My biggest issue was that the movie did seem to bog down a little. I didn't understand why the police wanted to
[Show spoiler]arrest Jiro
. Nor did I understand why they added the storyline involving the
[Show spoiler]German critic of Hitler. It didn't really seem to go anywhere
.

Yeah, I thought that it was a darker and more mature work. This is certainly not a kids movie at all. And, though I liked the film, I am not sure that it is one that I would buy. It just depends if I want a completed Miyazaki set. I know the film will stick with me and I will probably watch it again once it hits home video. But, if this really is the last film that Miyazaki makes then its a rather odd, but really good, film to end on.

Its too soon for me to rank it yet. But, for those of you that have had some time, what do you think? Is it your favorite or least favorite?

This character is a reference to Thomas Mann's novel, The Magic Mountain. In the book, the main character (Hans Castorp, the same name as this guy in The Wind Rises, and possibly even the same character) is holed up in a sanatorium and meets a variety of characters who give him advice and nuggets of wisdom which presumably enriches his worldview.

Ironically, though, in The Wind Rises, much of his nuggets of wisdom seems to have gone over Jiro's head. But he is a crucial function for putting into perspective Miyazaki's philosophical ruminations. As this is a very personal film, I think it would be wrong to ignore the romance subplot and the German character. They are very important elements in trying to figure out how to contextualize what Miyazaki is *actually* trying to say with this film.

Hayao Miyazaki and Stephen Alpert

Stephen Alpert worked at Studio Ghibli’s International division until the end of 2011. He always accompanied Miyazaki on his trips overseas, and their relationship eventually became a friendship. When Alpert had to leave Ghibli and return to the U.S. due to family matters, Miyazaki wanted to draw a caricature portrait of him as a goodbye gift. The director made numerous attempts until Alpert’s day of departure but wasn’t able to draw a satisfactory portrait in time. Then, the next year, the drawing of Alpert popped up in the storyboards for The Wind Rises.

Miyazaki finally succeeded in capturing Alpert’s likeness in his storyboard in the character of Castorp. Alpert flew back to Japan to provide the voice of Castorp. This character, a product of their friendship, plays matchmaker for Jiro and Nahoko, as well as an important role in conveying the world’s situation in the film.
For those of you who have Howls Moving Castle, Alpert is seen accompanying Miyazaki to Pixar and translating for Miyazaki. That's kind of the role that Castorp plays in the film.

Thanks! I figured that I may have to do some reading up on this. Thanks to both of you!

The Box Office Mojo website reports that Hayao Miyazaki's final feature film, The Wind Rises, earned an estimated US$871,000 in 496 American theaters this weekend. It dropped from #13 to #16 in its third weekend in the United States.

With a grand total of US$3,317,000, The Wind Rises is now #10 at the American box office among anime films of all time — below Miyazaki's Howl's Moving Castle (US$$4,711,096) and above Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke (US$$2,375,308). The Wind Rises' per-screen average this weekend is an estimated US$1,756.

The Wind Rises had opened with US$313,751 on 21 screens and then had earned US$1,517,404 on a wider release of 496 screens in its second weekend.

Disney released the film in North America, and Studio Ghibli International produced the English-language dub starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Emily Blunt with producer Frank Marshall (From Up On Poppy Hill, The Secret World of Arrietty, Ponyo).

The Wind Rises won the Annie Award for Writing in an Animated Feature Production on February 1. The film is nominated in the Academy Awards' Best Animated Feature Film category, and it won the same category in the Japan Academy Prizes on Friday.

I saw this today and absolutely loved it! Among my top 5 Ghibli films (that I've seen so far). Can't wait for the BR release date!

I'm not really a fan of most Ghibli works but I saw The Wind Rises on Saturday and is one of the few I really like, the others being Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Tales of Earthsea.

English dub was good and the story was great. Only little dissapointment to me was the artwork/animation...which was kind of basic (lots of items and such on screen, but mostly basic colors and techniques - not even close to the level of work put into Nausicaa) and really low framerate for the most part. I heard "gorgeous" and "breathtaking" thrown around for the art/animation work before seeing the film and fail to see how either would apply... which is a shame because "gorgeous" and "breathtaking" fully applies to the first work of Nausicaa.

Anyways, will be looking forward to the Blu-Ray release...
