Default Scaling 1080P to 4K using a 1080P Display

So I have an Epson 6500UB-1080P projector. I've been researching 4K projectors for many years now and have come across several that accept 4K signals and upscale to 4K, yet their chips are still 1080P--see Epson LS10000 as an example.

I have an OPPO 4K Bluray Player--BDP103. I have 4K certified HDMI cables--Audio Quest-Vodka series and I am about to purchase a Key Digital Phantom Series 4K HDMI Extender, Booster and Buffer, which from what I understand, will take a 1080P HDMI input and convert it to an HDCP 2.2 compliant HDMI input.

I have a theory that by purchasing that HDMI Extender by Key Digital, I should be able to upconvert all of my blurays to 1080P.

Can anyone explain why my theory isn't sound and will NOT work?

Blu-Rays are 1080p and don't need upscaled.
With the OPPO player it'll upscale 1080p to 4K if needed and you don't need any extra hardware for it nor does it need to HDCP 2.2 as HDMI is backwards compatible.

For any 4K signal to be accepted, it has to be a 4K HDMI input. But by instituting an actual 4K input for the projector, it should then be able to accept 4K and do the upscaling.

The OPPO player will output 4K just fine over HDMI 1.4 (it's part of the HDMI 1.4 spec), this is already upscaled so the projector itself wouldn't need to upscale anything.

I understand. But what can I do to get my 1080P projector to accept that up-scaled 4K image? Doesn't it have to do with my projectors outdated inputs, circa 2009? Currently, my screen is black, so my thinking is my input on my projector needs to be rated for 4K.

The Epson 6500UB-1080P? Not being a 4K projector would do it, also having a HDMI 1.3a port means it couldn't accept a 4K signal from HDMI 1.4 or later. If you added the HDCP 2.2 it definately wouldn't work, even at 1080p.
