Haven't seen Imitation Game yet but a lot of people are saying this; claims of blatant inaccuracy have hurt movies' Oscar chances in the past so it might happen here (have read similar complaints about American Sniper and Foxcatcher).

Watched the movie CODEBREAKER yesterday on Netflix.
Good companion piece to The Imitation Game. |

I went into this film thinking, "Hope I can tolerate another underwhelming Best Picture nominee." I have never been so surprised by a film in my life. Easily the best film of 2014.
I'd also add that framing the story in terms of the Turing test and making it come full-circle in regard to his homosexuality was one of the most clever pieces of writing I've seen in non-fiction. As far as this "sort of" debate on historical accuracy, I just kind of have to roll my eyes. When it comes to films, everyone somehow imagines themselves an expert on history, and complain about all the liberties that are taken while missing the point of the film. Anonymous (2011) was derided for being inaccurate, and pretty much no one picked up on the fact that it was meticulously structured as a Shakespearean play (with Shakespeare himself playing the role of the "fool"). On the other hand, I can understand why some may be precious about certain facts, especially when the truth is more interesting or complex than what is presented. But on the whole, people just need to realize that reading Wikipedia doesn't make them experts. That said, I love the screenwriter's statement regarding criticism of this film: "When you use the language of 'fact checking' to talk about a film, I think you're sort of fundamentally misunderstanding how art works. You don't fact check Monet's 'Water Lilies.' That's not what water lilies look like, that's what the sensation of experiencing water lilies feel like. That's the goal of the piece." Just effing brilliant. Last edited by 2awesome4apossum; 01-21-2015 at 05:08 AM. |
