Man’s Favorite Sport? (1964)

• NEW Audio Commentary by Filmmaker/Historian Michael Schlesinger with Select Remarks by Co-Star Paula Prentiss and Actor/Director Richard Benjamin
• Theatrical Trailer
• Optional English Subtitles

Color 120 Minutes 1.85:1 Not Rated
From legendary Hollywood director Howard Hawks (Rio Bravo, El Dorado), Man’s Favorite Sport? is a hilarious fish-out-of-water tale in the screwball style of Hawks’ classic Bringing Up Baby. Rock Hudson (Come September, Blindfold) is Roger Willoughby, happily employed as one of the world’s great angling experts. Unfortunately, even his own boss doesn’t know that Roger has never been fishing in his life. So when press agent Abigail Page (Paula Prentiss, What’s New Pussycat?, The Black Marble) arranges for Roger to participate in her resort’s upcoming fishing tournament, he’s thrown into a panic. At the resort, he and Abby commence a crash course to turn him into a genuine outdoorsman—only to have their plan riotously upset by a surprise visit from Roger’s fiancée. With a sparkling score by composer Henry Mancini (The Pink Panther), Man’s Favorite Sport? is a comedy classic you’ll fall for hook, line and sinker!

Well, this is kind of a weird one. The Universal release from a few years ago is still in print, and this doesn’t say anything about it being a new scan.

Same with Strange Bedfellows, which is also being re-released. Kino will offer commentary tracks with each, which is probably the only major difference between them. Kino's artwork better too in my opinion, but that's subjective.

Don't know about Strange Bedfellows but Universal's disc of Man's Favorite Sport doesn't have a menu. Movie just starts and then automatically starts playing again when movie is over. That would be a difference.

Kino said in the comments of the Facebook announcement that it will be the "same master" as the Universal blu-ray. The big selling point for me is the audio commentary which will contain "select remarks" by Paula Prentiss and her husband. She's probably the last person involved with the movie that is still alive so I'm looking forward to hearing it.

Despite this being a 60's 'rom-com', which are a bit of a stretch for me, it looks pretty fun.
Besides..it stars F'N Rock Hudson, so I'm in!

The Universal blu-rays also don't have the trailers but the Elephant Films blu-rays do (with non-removable French subtitles).

Would rather have a new scan than another disc with a menu and commentary track.

I never got this, so buying it dirt cheap in a Kino sale works for me.

Opening Credits

The memorable opening credits were designed by Wayne Fitzgerald:

The February 7, 1964, issue of Life magazine had a short article on the making of the opening credits. It has been scanned by Google and made available online:

It's in stock directly from Kino, and plenty of other retailers:

https://www.kinolorber.com/product/m...dition-blu-ray

https://www.deepdiscount.com/mans-fa...t/738329258061

https://www.target.com/p/man-s-favor...35#lnk=sametab

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/mans-fa...skuId=35457545

edit: It's in stock at Amazon too. Amazon must have changed ASIN and pages, so the one you pre-ordered from is now defunct.

A favorite film of mine. I’m very glad KL decided to release it themselves. A bit nicer of a release than the Universal one, just for the cover and commentary alone.
