Hi all, I posted this in the 4k hardware thread, but not getting any responses, thought I would try here.
I currently have the Sony XBR-55X850B (2014 4k model). Without doing any research I went and got the Xbox one S and 6 UHD movies. Only to realize that the Sony display won't play them, due to the fact it does not have HDR. So now I am having to upgrade to a HDR TV if I want to watch them. My budget is slim, so I am looking at the new Samsung 55KU6300 or the LG 55UH6150. Will it be worth it upgrading to one of these from the Sony. The Sony has an amazing picture, just really disappointed that it can't do what I want it to. Thanks in advance for any input. |

I have a Sony X850A in the bedroom which is a 2013 model and there was a firmware update to add HDMI 2.0 compatibility but it is only on one of the inputs. (Sorry I cannot recall off the top of my head which one it is but I have my Shield, and Sony 4K player running through my AVR to that input and get 4K.) Sounds like you may have the Xbox connected to an HDMI input which doesn't support HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2. If you move it to a compatible input, you should be able to get 4K. It does HDR 4K Blu-rays, Netflix, Amazon, and YouTube. |

It is tough to find more information and I know they did a firmware update for my set which is the year before yours but I can't find anything definitive on your set. https://community.sony.com/t5/4K-Ult...0B/td-p/469343 You may want to try various ports to see if you can get it to playback at 4K. |

Im in the same boat, that I adopted early and got the 850B series (mine is 65"). I'm also disappointed in the lack of HDR, but the Xbox 1 S should definitely display on your TV. Did you go into the video/output settings on the XBox? The default settings are not set to 4K, it's set to output at 1080P until you change it. Even without the HDR, the picture quality is pretty remarkable. I'm sure HDR probably makes a noticeable difference, but since you said your budget is tight - I don't know that I'd recommend already upgrading to another television. You and I both bought a cutting edge TV and then 6 months later it was outdone. I am of the opinion that is just the future of televisions. By the time you buy something, 6 months later it's going to be outdone. I think you should probably just sit back and enjoy the TV you have for a couple of years and then wait for the price of HDR to come down even more. That's what I've decided for myself

least expensive (highly recommended)
Vizio P-Series (2016) - Dolby Vision & HDR10 (both supported) most expensive (highly recommended) - (even more than the Vizio) Sony :: XBR-Z9D (2016) - no Dolby Vision support (disappointing for such an outstanding display) note :: either will 'highly satisfy' - both are 'outstanding' (neither will disappoint) |

I'm in a similar boat (I have a 2014 model Sony XBR 4K TV and just bought an XBOX ONE S along with a few UHD discs), with the key difference being that the discs DID play on my XBR. There was a brief screen note saying that I need to use a TV that supports HDR, but it disappeared quickly and the disc started, so I just (naively) assumed that it was a message received in error. I have watched multiple UHD 4K discs and this picture quality is indeed "better" than the comparable BLU-Ray, though not by leaps and bounds. I assume this is due to the lack of HDR compatibility in my display.
For me, because the discs DO play and the improvement is there, it is not worth it to me to invest in a newer TV with HDR (give me a year or two), I'm fine as is, but it is both interesting to know it could look even further improved, AND that you were unable to play the film's at all with a similar set up. |
