Default Worst encoding ever.

With most streaming services having poor to average encoding on most titles, I'm wondering what has too be some of the worst artifacing, blocking, banding and grain issues that have been seen on a Bluray disc. Mine would probably have to be Superman: Returns with its horrible low bitrates, banding in underwater scenes and general issues with the transfer.

The worst disc I own, out of nearly 1000, is:

The whole movie is squeezed on a BD-25, and any dimly lit scenes look like a 1990s quicktime file, alive with pixels like a psychedelic dream. Truly atrocious disc.

The HDR10 layer on StudioCanal’s The Fog 4K disc is a special kind of awful.

I was disappointed with TS's Zatoichi Darkness is his ally BR-nearly unwatchable due to the "blocking", followed by KK vs. Godzilla-blocks trying to imitate grain, lol.

But, it is my opinion, personal experiences may vary.

Superman Returns is not even close to the bottom of the barrel.

A good number of Shout's titles have poor encoding.

Well, the Red Heat UHD has some woefully terrible compression in places:

Out of my collection, from what I’ve watched so far, Kino’s “The Good, the Bad, and The Ugly” and StudioCanal’s remastered “The Graduate” are just abysmal blocking nightmares with the encodes.

Yeah, it is bad-I have that one and the Severin edition-IMHO, Severin's version is really good.

Billy Jack Goes to Washington from Shout, frame stutters/jumps for the entire 2 hr. film, the Image DVD does not have the problem.

I didn't noticed any "blocking" for Zatoichi '89. Most reviews would probably have mentioned it I would assume if it had it like this one https://thedigitalbits.com/item/zatoichi-1989-brd

The worst has to be Troma's War. I can't believe how bad the macroblocking is on that when it happens.

The worst I can think of that I own are the Apocalypse Now: Final Cut Blu and the massively outdated Blade Runner: The Final Cut. Such pathetic bitrates for epic movies.

I popped in the remastered AN Blu discs to compare to the old release...yikes. The old release is encoded competently but looks like ass and the new release looks better but is encoded badly. 4K is the way to go with AN.

AN FC is a real disaster. I don't recall BR looking nearly as bad (although certainly not perfect).

There are low bit-rates out there that look fine and some higher bit rates that look mediocre. It's how they are used what matters - the art and skill.

If only David M could encode every disc in the world.

Still drooling over Arrow Robocop from a couple of nights ago.
