Default So who here plays tabletop games?

I figured this forum is full of fellow geeks so why not see who else here enjoys tabletop games? It could be card games, dice games, board games it doesn't matter. This is a huge hobby for me right next to movies and Lego so they are a big part of my life. Every single weekend my wife and i along with 2 friends sit down and play hours of games. We've now amassed a collection of well over 100 games of all different types to give variety.

I was wondering if you do play what games do you enjoy? What games would you recommend? What are your favorite types? I just want to know if anyone else here shares this hobby.

I can start with a game i have really been having a blast with. The game is Quixx and we picked it up Friday night for only $10 at Target. This is one of the best dice games i've played and we've already went through the entire book of score sheets. If you like Yatzee you'll like this.

I enjoy board games, too. I own about fifteen games. These things are expensive! As you will see by my list (all of which I highly recommend) I'm mostly into Eurogames:

1. Takenoko - This one is my favorite game so far. So simple and so addicting. Eat bamboo, plant bamboo, cultivate the land. Don't forget to irrigate the land!
[Show spoiler]

2. Ticket to Ride - This is like the gateway board game. I'm sure most people here have heard of it before. I added the Europe version because it's the one I own!
[Show spoiler]

3. Spyrium - Worker placement game. I am just starting to learn this one.
[Show spoiler]

4. Splendor - Easy to learn and slow to start but the pace picks up very quickly.
[Show spoiler]

5. Tokaido - Take a stroll down the Silk Road. Very relaxing and also competitive game. Do you eat? Do you go to the temple? Buy clothing? Do some or do all!
[Show spoiler]

6. Zombie Dice - Roll the dice, eat the brains. Don't get shot! I play this one during commercials.
[Show spoiler]

Don't forget, April 30 is TableTop Day! I'll be hitting up my FLGS and see what goes on. Try to learn a new game or two. Last year, I learned how to play Bang! and Munchkin. Bang is really fun when you have at least six players. Munchkin is fun at first but gets boring way too fast. Munchkin is all luck and no skill or strategy required.

I'll definitely look into your suggestion of Qwixx. Sounds like fun if you already depleted your score sheets.

You have an excellent list there. I own Zombie Dice, Tokaido, and Ticket to Ride (Europe and standard). I absolutely love Ticket to Ride and play it almost biweekly. It takes skill yet is easy to pick up and play. Fantastic game! I have looked at Splendor several times and I think I'll pick it up ASAP off your recommendation. The others I'll definitely look into too, especially Takenoko which sounds great.

I am pretty excited for tabletop day. Hopefully I get out of work early enough.

I definitely get you on the games being expensive. I spent $70 on Beyond The House On The Hill, but it was worth it IMO. Here is my collection so far. This room is my tabletop game/Lego room.

Your room looks fantastic. Have you considered getting a gaming table? A youtube guy named Rahdo recommended the "DENIS" table made by GEEKNSON. It looks so nice but is way out of my price range. Plus, I suppose I don't play enough games to justify the purchase.

My table is just any plain table I can get my hands on - usually dining tables at my house or friend's. I purchased a bunch of 14" x 24" playmats made by HCD. I just lay them out on the table. Makes picking up cards and rolling dice so much nicer. Do you use playmats or do you just roll the dice on your table?

I also bought a shadowbox and removed the glass. I use that as a dice tray. Right now, it feels a little small so I am considering going out and purchasing a bigger box and lining it with felt so I can have a bigger dice tray.

I definitely recommend Splendor. The game is so easy to learn. It's like Ticket to Ride. Each turn, you get to do one of four actions. You buy cards and build up your supply of gems. Then you have enough gems, a noble visits you for extra victory points. Score 15 and you win. Very, very easy to learn and has tons of replay value. Also, the chips are really nice quality to boot. They are like casino chips.

Takenoko is also incredibly fun. Very easy to learn as well and is great for kids and adults. Requires strategy and a little bit of luck.

I'm also a card and board game player (but not as often as I would like).

The only card games with a regular deck I play is Back Alley Bridge, Canasta, Poker (all types) and occasionally solitaire. Have a phase ten deck which is also a lot of fun.

In terms of board games, I'll play it all. Ticket to Ride, Puerto Rico, own Power Grid (haven't played yet) etc.... Love the classics as well- Risk (my favorite), Monopoly, Scotland Yard, Stratego, Chess, Clue, Spy Alley, aggravation (marbles), Trivia Pursuit. Also play party type games like Pit, Say Anything, For Sale, Wits and Wagers, Balderdash etc....

My wife and I enjoy board games, but lately we've been playing Jackbox Party on the Xbox One. It comes with 5 games (Drawful is our favorite), and you can play up to 100 people on some games, as everyone logs in using their cell phone.

We have been getting a few for our daughter (she's 4) like Hungry Hungry Hippos, Perfection and Candy Land to get her into them. We both LOVE Monopoly so I'm looking forward to the day she understands that one!

I used to love Sorry! and Parcheesi and I play poker with the boys once a month. I really want to go pick up Operation for my daughter because I think she'd really enjoy it. I'm a huge Chess fan too. My grandfather actually played in the Olympics in Cuba back in the day.

This is a fun topic! Makes me remember all the games I loved in my youth like Mouse Trap, Uno and Nightmare on Elm Street (classic).

I remember when I was a kid one year and the neighbors had a garage sale. I got the Jaws game, mint in box, for .25. That was the one with the big plastic shark that had all the garbage and body parts in his mouth and you had to fish out pieces one by one with the little plastic hooks. Whoever took the piece that Jaws closed his mouth on was the loser.

Man I wish I had that now. I'm the biggest Jaws fan. Ok, my geek is really showing. Back to work. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

From a couple weeks ago, play this a few times a month with a friend. Also have several other board games but it's hard getting people over to play them as everyone I know has kids or is back in school like me. Maybe when the kids get older lol.

Played last night and the game went 6 hours before a concede happened. Poor Africa was taken and re-taken 4 separate occasions by 3 different nations.

Edit: Takenoko I have this too! So awesome

Not big on board games, but I regularly play bridge and especially double-deck pinochle.

That does look pretty good. Not sure I'd back it but I wouldn't mind giving it a spin if I see it at my FLGS.

The one game I have on my To Buy list is New York 1901. Saw a gameplay video of it over the weekend and it looks like so much fun even with just two players.

Where do you guys get all your games? I get my games from CoolStuffInc. I used to buy mostly from BoardGameWarehouse but they went out of business and then Miniature Market bought out BGW's remaining stock.

I backed the first up until it was time to pay and I didn't have the funds. I've regretted it though because it had tons of exclusives so I'm going to make sure k don't miss the 2nd. The first game is a blast.

I've never heard of New York 1901 until you mentioned it and it is definitely on my list now. I'm going to watch some videos on it, but just from the Amazon page it looks quite good.

As for where I buy I really don't have any set place. I'd say most of my collection came from Amazon and Books A Million, but I have odds and ends from many different stores and sites.

I heard of Books-A-Million and from what I have read people have nothing but positive things to say about them. I have yet to give them a try. I mostly order from CoolStuffInc because they package their stuff really well. The few games I purchased from Amazon were just thrown into a giant box and came a little bit beat up. I know it's just a box and the insides are all fine but I kinda like having my boxes in nice condition.

If you want to check out a nice gameplay video for New York 1901, check out Rahdo Runs Through by a guy named Rahdo. He does detailed gameplay videos of tons of games and really lets you see how the games are played and how it would feel to be playing them. Sometimes he gets a rule wrong here and there but he does try to put notes into the videos "correcting" himself. I bought more than a few games just watching his videos.

Three more weeks until Tabletop Day!

Picked this up today at Target. Hopefully it is good, but it was only $10 so not too much risk.

One dice game I have always wanted to try is Roll For It! but I haven't seen it at my local store. Do you have that one? From your post earlier and now this one, it seems you like dice games.

I just bought Pandemic: The Cure last Saturday. I can't wait to try it out.

I've seen Roll For It, but I haven't picked it up yet. I probably will sometime in the future. I definitely enjoy dice games quite a bit. I'm pretty flexible with what I play, but if I have only 20 minutes or so I don't feel like setup a dice game ends up being a perfect choice.

The original Pandemic is a blast so I should definitely check out the cure version. I believe I've seen it while browsing yet never really looked into it.
